The value stream method has become a standard approach for the analysis and design of production areas in many companies. However, the conventional method is designed for high-volume production. We propose a new value stream analysis and design, tailored to the specific needs of make-to-order companies. While maintaining the paper-and-pencil approach for data collection, we set a focus on schedule reliability and the required manufacturing control methods. The new method is presented by the example of an industrial manufacturer of precision parts.
