This work is focusing on oxygen as gaseous substrate, in order to compare fine bubble with established macro- and submillibubble aeration techniques and investigates the feasibility for application in biocatalysis. The utilization of fine bubble aeration is s demonstrated to be beneficial in view of yield, gas utility, oxygen atom economy, mass transfer performance and enzyme stability. Especially, the enhanced gas utilization and enzyme stability provides a high potential for the optimization of processes in aerated (bio)-catalytic reactions. Due to this, fine bubble technology is offering the possibility to reduce the production costs by reducing process gas streams and the demand of enzymes in industrial biocatalysis.
