Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can improve the hydrodynamic design of ships before model tests are performed. Panel methods and (Reynolds-averaged) Navier-Stokes solver are the most important CFO tools for practical applications. Panel methods are used to compute the inviscid free-surface flow to evaluateo the forebody. Navier-Stokes solvers solve the Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes equations (RANSE) for viscous flows. They allow an evaluation of the aftbody and flow analysis of appendages. Most methods still neglect the free surface. The results are not yet accurate enough to predict resistance or power requirements. CFO rather gives insight into flow details and is best used to compare different variants of hull shapes.
