The main focus of the work at Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH) contributing to the joint collaborative research project ProEis was a numerical model for the flow around ships in ice-covered areas. The procedure consists of a viscous (turbulent) flow solver with a bidirectional, monolithic coupling to a contact-dynamics simulation procedure. The outcome of the project is the development and application of a complex numerical ice tank for the simulation of the flow around ship hulls in pack-ice conditions with up to approximately 1000 ice floes. The ice floes move fully-dynamically within the computational domain and interact with each other as well as with the hull and the propulsion devices. The analysis of the ice floe dynamics in model scale reveals a fair agreement with experimental results carried out at an ice tank for different hulls as well as different types of propulsors (Azi-Pod and Voith-Schneider), which proves the physical consistency of the computational framework.
