    A novel package approach for multichip modules based on anisotropic conductive adhesives
    (Horizon House Publ., 2005-10)
    Heyen, Johann
    ;
    Jacob, Arne F.
    In this paper anisotropic conductive pastes (ACP) are proposed for different level interconnections of millimeter-wave multichip modules (MCM) and packages. A novel ACP-based approach for cavity-up millimeter-wave packages simultaneously featuring small size, electrical and mechanical interconnection as well as heat transfer capabilities is presented.

    A scattering approach for the characterization of composite materials
    (IEEE, 2005-04-11)
    Psilopoulos, Jannis
    ;
    Meiners, Christian
    ;
    Jacob, Arne
    A scattering approach for the calculation of the effective constitutive parameters of composite materials is discussed. The scattering behavior of a generic particle is first formulated by a T-matrix using dipole-polarizabilities and an expansion of the dipole fields into spherical harmonics. Then, a simpler alternative approach is developed and applied to compute the scattered fields of composite samples. The effective constitutive parameters are calculated by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The method is validated with small metal helices, forming a chiral material, by comparing the calculated constitutive parameters to those obtained by the Maxwell - Garnett mixing rules. © 2005 IEEE.

    Compact calibration scheme for planar DBF transmit antenna arrays using circular polarization at ka-band
    (IEEE, 2005-07)
    Pawlak, Holger
    ;
    Nötel, Denis
    ;
    Jacob, Arne
    A compact calibration scheme especially suited for planar transmit antenna arrays using digital beamforming (DBF) and circular polarization is presented. This scheme relies on an online differential measurement of a section of the antenna element radiation pattern by use of external probe antennas. Focus of this paper is on extraction of calibration data and the design and test of suitable probe antennas. Measurement results are presented for the probe antennas and simulation results for the accuracy of the calibration scheme. © 2005 IEEE.

    Multilayer capacitors with reduced parasitics
    (Horizon House Publ., 2005-10)
    Heyen, Johann
    ;
    Jacob, Arne
    This paper presents multilayer integrated capacitors. Stacked parallel plate and via topologies are discussed. A novel structure featuring both RF-blocking capabilities and reduced parasitic inductance effects is proposed. Reduced parasitics increase the self resonance frequency of the structure and make it applicable to highly integrated multichip modules up to millimeter-wave frequencies. Analytical and experimental results fully validate this approach.

    On the scattering properties of composite materials
    (2005-07)
    Meiners, Christian
    ;
    Jacob, Arne
    This contribution focuses on a calculation approach for the analysis of composite materials. The scattered fields of the inclusions are decomposed into multipole fields. The latter are linked to the incident field via characteristic multipole polarizabilities. As an example, the scattering and interaction behavior of helical inclusions - basic elements of artificial chiral media - is investigated in the frequency domain including the resonance case. © 2005 IEEE.

    For a more flexible method of moments analysis of planar circuits, the theory of wavelet transforms is expanded to two-dimensional vector-valued functions with triangular support, the elementary cells being composed of right isosceles triangles. Efficient scaling and matrix sparsity are demonstrated with two suitable examples. © 2005 IEEE.
