    Breaking barriers: the role of external innovation support in enhancing media organisations’ innovation processes
    (Taylor & Francis, 2025-10-22) ;
    In recent years, external support for journalism innovation has grown, driven by public, private, and philanthropic actors, such as governments, tech companies and foundations. This paper analyses how these supporters assist media organisations in overcoming common challenges and barriers in their innovation processes. Using the German WPK Innovation Fund as a unique research setting, it adopts a qualitative longitudinal multiple-case study approach combining interviews, document analysis and observations to examine 20 innovation ventures in journalism. Findings show that such support can play a pivotal role for media organisations, particularly at the meso level of organisational challenges. The paper provides a framework for future research to analyse other support structures more systematically and holds practical implications for all parties designing and improving them.

    The role of policy mixes in enabling journalism innovation: a transnational study across five countries
    (University of Southern California, 2025) ; ; ;
    Research has largely overlooked the macro-level conditions under which journalism innovation occurs. This study addresses the prevailing gap through a cross-country case study approach, critically examining the form, context, and nature of innovation policies for private media. Applying the policy mix framework, we analyze data from 30 semistructured interviews and 32 documents from Canada, Denmark, France, Norway, and the Netherlands. Our findings reveal that several countries have adopted a mix of different policy instruments to foster journalism innovation. They further show that innovation-policymaking for journalism often follows several uncoordinated, small events. However, despite societal trust in this type of public funding for journalism, inconsistency, incomprehensiveness, and incoherence persist in existing policy mixes. Our study yields significance for both academia and policymaking by underscoring the relevance of integrating innovation policy theory into journalism innovation research and providing practitioners with guidance for improving existing policy mixes in the future.

    Transformative Forschung für einen digitalen Journalismus der Zukunft
    (Springer, 2024-08-05) ;
    Der Beitrag entfaltet ein transformatives Verständnis von Wissenschaft und Forschung, das in jüngster Zeit Eingang auch in die Journalistik findet. Transformative Forschung orientiert sich an Herausforderungen der Praxis und ist durch den Anspruch gekennzeichnet, wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisfortschritte aktiv in zukunftsgerichtete Entwicklungen des untersuchten Gegenstandsbereichs einzubringen. Wissenschaft wird so selbst zum Akteur des Wandels und der Zukunftsgestaltung von Medien und Journalismus. Der Beitrag zeigt exemplarisch anhand des gegenwärtig durchgeführten Verbundforschungsprojekts „Transformative Innovationsforschung für den Wissenschaftsjournalismus“, wie die Journalismusforschung zu einer Forschung für den digitalen Journalismus von morgen entwickelt werden kann. Die Überlegungen werden in den wissenschaftstheoretischen Kontext einer „Kommunikations-Kommunikationswissenschaft“ nach Matthias Karmasin gestellt.

    Transforming science journalism through collaborative research : a case study of the German “WPK Innovation Fund for Science Journalism”
    Science journalism, a unique form of science communication, faces grand challenges requiring innovation for its sustainability. This practice insight delves into a research-practice collaboration addressing the “WPK Innovation Fund for Science Journalism”, a pioneering support infrastructure for innovation in German science journalism. Our transformative accompanying research project aims to both support the fund’s development as well as advance science journalism research. This report, co-authored by researchers and practitioners, showcases opportunities and challenges, drawing from the three forms of knowledge generated in the collaboration: systems, target, and transformation knowledge. Each of these forms sheds light on specific lessons learned in our project on how to conduct transformative journalism research.

    Die deutsche Filmförderung - eine einzigartige Medienförderung? Möglichkeiten und Grenzen ihrer Übertragbarkeit auf den Journalismus
    (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft e.V., 2023-10) ; ;
    The call for public funding to support the structural transformation and address the current crisis of commercially organized news media in Germany is becoming increasingly more significant. However, the specific design of a state-based journalism support remains unclear, setting journalism apart from the well-established subsidy system for film in Germany. Previous literature has suggested considering German film subsidies as a template for potential journalism funding. This article examines whether and to what extent such a transfer is promising by conducting a primary inductive, qualitative content analysis of six film funding schemes, analyzing 36 documents (funding guidelines and secondary literature). The findings reveal potential for transfer and valuable analogies, particularly in the areas of funding priorities, selection mechanisms, the funding sources and the organizational structures. Beyond the potential, the study also emphasizes limits of transferability.
