Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Methodical development of modular product families: Developing high product diversity in a manageable wayThis book focuses on the development of multi-variant products using modular product structures and thus addresses the reduction of complexity from a product development perspective. These modular product structures allow for a greater variety of demand with a smaller, internal variety of components and processes. As a supplement to the common product development methodology, the necessary basics of modularity and variant diversity as well as the corresponding methods are presented comprehensively. The book thus summarizes the current state of science as well as the research activities of the past ten years at the Institute of Product Development and Design Technology at the TU Hamburg-Harburg. The target groups This book is aimed at product developers and decision makers in practice. Science is offered a helpful reference book and interested engineering students can immerse themselves in the development of modular product families with the necessary basics. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Methodische Entwicklung modularer Produktfamilien by Dieter Krause and Nicolas Gebhardt, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2018. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.Publicationtype: Book124 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publicationtype: Conference Paper41 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Towards a decision-making framework for multi-criteria product modularization in cooperative environmentsModular product family design is a strong strategy to offer a wide range of product variants economically. Many methods for designing and assessing modular product concepts are provided in literature - deciding between modular product structure alternatives, however, is still a challenging task, because of the many and unforeseeable effects on all product life-phases in combination with the high number of involved stakeholders. In addition, modularity alternatives cause multi-dimensional trade-offs that make the decision process a complex challenge. Current approaches to decide the product modularization tend to focus on the prediction of either internal or external consequences. Furthermore, they rarely consider the prevalent situation of a company’s internal tier structure with different organizational sections, responsible for different module design and supply. In this paper, we investigate modularity decision problems and introduce an innovative framework and modularity decision dashboard, considering internal and external variety evaluation, conflicting objectives of stakeholders as well as company-internal tier structures of component, module and product suppliers. The approach builds on the integrated PKT-approach for developing modular product families, recent findings in complexity cost evaluation, effects of modularization and modularity decision problems. An industrial application at a modularization strategy project in an international powertool company is presented and proves basic validity of the framework and the process model. The results of the study demonstrate how an applicable modularity decision dashboard can facilitate cooperative decision-making and leads to a balanced variety for the electromotor module portfolio in an industrial environment.Publicationtype: Journal ArticleScopus© Citations 8 277 425 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , ModSupport Project - Methodical development of an innovative modular construction kit for elevator systemsMany small and medium size enterprises (SME) successfully offer high product variety as a strategy to compete against bigger companies. The trend of globalisation with more emerging companies on the market fosters this further. This strategy often leads to an increased internal variety of components and processes with higher complexity costs, which finally outweigh the intended profits. Lutz Elevators solved this problem by new module kit elevators and a corresponding configure-to-order process. Development and implementation of the modular product structures and processes were undertaken in the joint research project ModSupport with the Institute of Product Development and Mechanical Engineering Design at the Hamburg University of Technology. This paper gives a conclusion on the project case.Publicationtype: Conference Paper171 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Assessing impacts of modular product architectures on the firm: a case studyProduct modularization is difficult and has far-reaching impacts for the company. It requires a sound understanding of cause and effect chains, which start with product structure decisions, such as module boundary definitions or interface specifications, and lead to essential target values consisting of cost, quality and time categories for each product and the product portfolio. This paper investigates effects of modularity on product development and the challenges to assess them, and gives a further hint research on support for decision makers in the context of modular product definition.Publicationtype: Conference Paper60 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Sustainability of modular product families(2015-07); ; ; A global customer base demanding highly individual products often forces companies to offer a wide range of products. Commonality within modular product families allows great product variety through lower internal variety of components and processes. Companies then struggle with sustainability of modular product families, that is, managing commonality across the product family lifecycle when modular product families are changed to react to new customer demands. Based on a literature review, the current support from academia for handling the sustainability of modular product families is presented. The findings are consolidated into a conceptual schema. The subsequent successful use of the conceptual schema in the process planning of a medium-sized enterprise, developing and producing elevators, identified further factors that influence the sustainability of modular product families. These factors will be addressed in the future, with support from academia.Publicationtype: Conference Paper28 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , On the development of visualisation concepts as tools in product design(2015-07); Visualisations as tools for product design are very useful in supporting engineers in their tasks. Product design is a complex task and features interdisciplinarity and communication across departments. Visualisations can help to increase product design performance under these challenges. The integrated PKT- Approach for developing modular product families, Radikal Forenkling via Design or Complexity Management by DSMs and Node-Link-Graphs are just a few examples of methods for product design that utilize visualisations as important tools for design support. Much research has been done in order to develop such visualisation concepts and on how these can be used in engineering design. In this paper however the focus lies on how design researchers proceed when developing a visualisation concept meant as a tool for engineering design, what problems they encountered and what need for support they have for the development of the visualisations. Fourteen cases of PhD projects at three universities have been analysed by document study and interviews. The results build a foundation for a future support that can help to develop effective visualisation concepts as tools in product design.Publicationtype: Conference Paper41 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , An example of visually supported design of modular product familiesTo offer individualized products at globally marketable prices, the Integrated PKT-Approach for Developing Modular Product Families aims to generate high external product variety based on a low internal process and component variety. Specific visualizations are an important factor in the success of this approach. In this paper the Module Interface Graph (MIG) developed at the Institute for Product Development and Mechanical Engineering Design (PKT) is used to show how specific visualization concepts of a product family can help present important information, as well as define module interfaces and boundaries during the modularization of a product family. Two brief industrial case studies are presented to give insight into using the MIG and emphasize potential improvements to visual product representations for developing modular product families in a team.Publicationtype: Journal ArticleScopus© Citations 26 313 268
