Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Real-time optimization of load sharing for gas compressors in the presence of uncertainty(Elsevier, 2020-08-15) ;Milosavljevic, Predrag; ;Cortinovis, Andrea; Mercangöz, MehmetThis paper investigates the problem of load-sharing optimization of gas compressors in the presence of uncertainty. The objective is to operate a set of compressor units in an energy-efficient way, while at the same time meeting a varying load demand. The main challenge is the fact that the available models, and in particular the compressor efficiency maps, carry a significant amount of uncertainty. For this task, real-time optimization (RTO) techniques that rely on plant measurements and correct the model are available in the literature. This paper is tailored to the application of RTO to the compressor load-sharing optimization problem. An adaptive optimization approach that guarantees optimal plant operation upon convergence is used. To this end, we use appropriate measurements to estimate plant gradients and correct the model in such a way that it exhibits the same optimality conditions as the plant. This way, the challenge is shifted from having an accurate model to being able to estimate experimental gradients accurately. We show how the specific problem structure can be exploited for the purpose of efficient estimation of plant gradients. We consider both parallel and serial compressor configurations as well as operation close to surge constraints. The simulation of an industrial case study demonstrates the efficiency of the proposed approach.Publicationtype: Journal Article13 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , A note on efficient computation of privileged directions in modifier adaptationIn the presence of plant-model mismatch, the estimation of plant gradients is key to the performance of measurement-based iterative optimization schemes. However, gradient estimation requires time-consuming experiments, wherein the plant is sequentially perturbed in all input directions. To ease this gradient estimation task, it has been proposed to exploit the sensitivity of the model gradient with respect to the model parameters to find a reduced input subspace that is spanned by a few privileged directions for gradient estimation. The computation of gradient sensitivities to parametric variations requires the evaluation of double derivatives with respect to both the inputs and the parameters. In this short note, we propose an approach for computing the privileged directions using only single derivatives with respect to the inputs. We show that this approach results in significant reduction in computational costs without compromising the quality of the privileged directions.Publicationtype: Journal Article15 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Enforcing optimal operation in solid-oxide fuel-cell systems(Elsevier, 2019-08-15) ;de Avila Ferreira, Tafarel ;Wuillemin, Zacharie; ;Salzmann, ChristopheVan herle, JanThis paper describes an optimization strategy for operating solid-oxide fuel-cell systems at optimal efficiency. Specifically, we present the experimental validation of a real-time optimization (RTO) strategy applied to a commercial solid-oxide fuel-cell system. The proposed RTO scheme effectively pushes the system to higher levels of efficiency and maintains the system there despite perturbations by tracking active constraints. The optimization approach uses either steady-state measurements, or transient measurements in combination with a dynamic model, and can deal effectively with plant-model mismatch. In the reported experiments, the approach drives the system to the desired power demand at optimal efficiency. The experimental fuel-cell system reached 65% DC electrical efficiency. As such, the proposed RTO scheme is a promising candidate for enforcing optimal micro-CHP operation. In addition, the approach can deal with slow drifts such as degradation without compromising on efficiency. Finally, and important from a practical point of view, we suggest guidelines for safe and optimal operation.Publicationtype: Journal Article10 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Active directional modifier adaptation for real-time optimizationModifier adaptation is a real-time optimization (RTO) methodology that uses plant gradient estimates to correct model gradients, thereby driving the plant to optimality. However, obtaining accurate gradient estimates requires costly plant experiments at each RTO iteration. In directional modifier adaptation (DMA), the model gradients are corrected only in a small subspace of the input space, thus requiring fewer plant experiments. DMA selects the input subspace offline based on the local sensitivity of the Lagrangian gradient with respect to the uncertain model parameters. Here, we propose an extension, whereby the input subspace is selected at each RTO iteration via global sensitivity analysis, thus making the approach more reactive to changes and robust to large parametric uncertainties. Simulation results performed on the run-to-run optimization of two different semi-batch reactors show that the proposed approach finds a nice balance between experimental cost and optimality.Publicationtype: Journal Article9 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , A distributed feasible-side convergent modifier-adaptation scheme for interconnected systems, with application to gas-compressor stations(Elsevier, 2018-07-12) ;Milosavljevic, Predrag ;Schneider, René ;Cortinovis, Andrea; Recently, a feasible-side globally convergent modifier-adaptation scheme has been proposed for the real-time optimization of uncertain systems. We show that this scheme is related to proximal-gradient algorithms in numerical optimization and we exploit this relationship to analyze its convergence in the case of inexact gradient information. We also make use of this relationship to propose a novel distributed modifier-adaptation algorithm for interconnected systems that uses a coordinator and knowledge of the interconnection topology. We then prove its feasible-side convergence to plant optimality. In addition, our distributed algorithm ensures confidentiality of local models and data. We finally demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of this algorithm on a load-sharing optimization case study for serially connected gas compressors.Publicationtype: Journal Article8 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , A feasible-side globally convergent modifier-adaptation schemeIn the context of static real-time optimization (RTO) of uncertain plants, the standard modifier-adaptation scheme consists in adding first-order correction terms to the cost and constraint functions of a model-based optimization problem. If the algorithm converges, the limit is guaranteed to be a KKT point of the plant. This paper presents a general RTO formulation, wherein the cost and constraint functions belong to a certain class of convex upper-bounding functions. It is demonstrated that this RTO formulation enforces feasible-side global convergence to a KKT point of the plant. Based on this result, a novel modifier-adaptation scheme with guaranteed feasible-side global convergence is proposed. In addition to the first-order correction terms, quadratic terms are added in order to convexify and upper bound the cost and constraint functions. The applicability of the approach is demonstrated on a constrained variant of the Williams–Otto reactor for which standard modifier adaptation fails to converge in the presence of plant-model mismatch.Publicationtype: Journal Article13 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Modifier adaptation for real-time optimization : methods and applications(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2016-12-01); ;François, Grégory; This paper presents an overview of the recent developments of modifier-adaptation schemes for real-time optimization of uncertain processes. These schemes have the ability to reach plant optimality upon convergence despite the presence of structural plant-model mismatch. Modifier Adaptation has its origins in the technique of Integrated System Optimization and Parameter Estimation, but differs in the definition of the modifiers and in the fact that no parameter estimation is required. This paper reviews the fundamentals of Modifier Adaptation and provides an overview of several variants and extensions. Furthermore, the paper discusses different methods for estimating the required gradients (or modifiers) from noisy measurements. We also give an overview of the application studies available in the literature. Finally, the paper briefly discusses open issues so as to promote future research in this area.Publicationtype: Review Article4 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Optimal load sharing of parallel compressors via modifier adaptation(IEEE, 2016) ;Milosavljevic, Predrag ;Cortinovis, Andrea; ; Mercangöz, MehmetWe discuss optimal load sharing of parallel gas compressors in the presence of plant-model mismatch. We formulate this problem as a static real-time optimization task and propose to tackle it by means of modifier adaptation. Under mild assumptions, the chosen approach guarantees optimal operating conditions upon convergence. Furthermore, we discuss how the specific problem structure can be exploited to estimate the plant gradients efficiently during process operation. Finally, we draw upon simulated case studies for two and six compressors to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed real-time optimization approach.Publicationtype: Conference Paper9 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , On handling cost gradient uncertainty in real-time optimizationThis paper deals with the real-time optimization of uncertain plants and proposes an approach based on surrogate models to reach the plant optimum when the plant cost gradient is imperfectly known. It is shown that, for processes with only box constraints, the optimum is reached upon convergence if the multiplicative gradient uncertainty lies within some bounded interval. For the case of general constraints, conditions are derived that guarantee plant feasibility and, in principle, allow enforcing cost decrease at each iteration.Publicationtype: Conference Paper7 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , On the use of second-order modifiers for real-time optimizationWe consider the real-time optimization of static plants and propose a generalized version of the modifier-adaptation strategy that relies on second-order adaptation of the cost and constraint functions. We show that second-order adaptation allows checking whether a (local) plant optimum is reached upon convergence. A sufficient convergence condition that is applicable to first- and second-order modifier-adaptation schemes is proposed. We also discuss how second-order updates can lead to SQP-like model-free RTO schemes. The approach is illustrated via the simulated example of a continuous reactor.Publicationtype: Conference Paper6
