From Web service policies to automatic deviation handling: Supporting semantic description of reactions to policy violations
In scenarios where Web services are involved, Quality of Service (QoS) parameters play an important role when it comes to service selection, service compositions, and runtime behavior of the execution environment, e.g. a workflow engine. Required or guaranteed QoS levels are often described by means of Web service policies. However, policy languages do usually not include the handling of deviations respectively reactions. In this paper, we introduce WS-Re2Policy 2.0, a semantic extension of our former work on a policy language which makes use of WS-Policy in order to describe requirements and handling of deviations through defined reactions. Furthermore, we present a basic ontology for reactions which we make use of in order to semantically annotate reactions in WS-Re2Policy 2.0.

Applied service engineering for single services and corresponding service landscapes
Building reusable and autonomous services that possess the proper degree of granularity is critical for the success of a service-oriented architecture (SOA), especially for large and heterogeneous application landscapes. While there are a number of approaches to service engineering, most of these approaches are designed with a special purpose or project context in mind. This paper presents a pragmatic approach to service engineering that can be applied in scenarios where it is particularly necessary to identify service interfaces with the right granularity. The approach is based on a comparison of service engineering methodologies with special regard for their ability to connect different levels of an SOA. We apply concepts from this approach to build single services and their service landscapes. We also suggest the utilization of service inventory techniques to evaluate and assess the outcome of the proposed service engineering methodology.

Process reliability in service oriented architectures
The creation of business processes by composing Web services has attracted considerable efforts with respect to integrating elements of Service Oriented Architectures within enterprise applications. If one of those atomic services fails, the whole business process does not necessarily have to fail, too, as it is possible to exchange the faulty service during runtime with another one which has the same functionality. In this paper we present a service monitoring and exchanging approach that aims to ensure a successful execution of crucial processes in case of faulty services. It consists of three parts which supervise the process execution and try to recover it if an error occurs. In case process reliability is not fore grounded, our approach can also serve as basis for process optimization.

Governance of a service-oriented architecture for environmental and public security
Research for the application of technical support in environmental projects has grown rapidly due to the progress of sensor network systems and the large, scalable IT infrastructures that can unify and expand them. There are numerous attempts to make use of new technologies in order to serve environmental purposes. The research presented in this paper focuses on critical aspects of the core infrastructure of a project that aims to serve these purposes as well. The nature of the actions that must be taken against environmental disasters, which are our target use cases, dictate that extended, crossorganizational information and communication systems are engaged. In order to integrate information from different sources and process heterogeneous services, the IT infrastructure is based on the paradigm of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA). However, the distributed and often very large nature of an SOA leads to a need for governance mechanisms. We present an SOA governance approach targeted to serve the purposes of large-scale distributed IT landscapes for environmental and public security.

General requirements of banks on IT architectures and the service-oriented architecture Paradigm
The Service-oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm has been gaining momentum over the last few years. Although the banking industry has often been mentioned as an early adaptor of service-oriented technologies, there is still a lack of knowledge concerning bank requirements on IT architectures and whether an SOA is suited to meet them. In this paper, we present the results from an empirical study which quantifies the qualification of service-oriented technologies for the German banking industry. By using data collected from the German banking industry, it turns out that SOA is apparently suited to meet predefined needs of this industry. However, there are differences in the expectations among various groups of banks. In addition, this paper presents the status quo of SOA adaptations in German banks.

Building the semantic utility with standards and semantic web services
Within this contribution, we outline the need for standards in the utility industry. We motivate the need for modern industry standards such as those developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission and introduce concepts based on those standards to foster integration in a modern utility environment by using service-oriented architectures and Semantic Web services. The focus lies on COLIN, a methodology applicable to overcome fallacies in the integration of different industry standards. Furthermore, we propose the usage of information allocated using the COLIN methodology to annotate Web services with semantic information.

An approach to evaluate and enhance the retrieval of semantic Web services
In order to achieve the (semi-) automatic composition of Web services to business processes and workflows respectively, it is necessary to make use of semantic information regarding the capabilities and further characteristics of particular Web services. In recent years, a couple of approaches have been proposed to achieve (semi-) automatic annotation, retrieval, and composition of Semantic Web services; however, differences in Web service standards and repositories used for the evaluation of these approaches lead to a lack of both in-depth evaluations and comparability of the proposals. In this paper, we present a workbench to test and evaluate the performance of annotation, retrieval, and composition algorithms for Semantic Web services. As a proof of concept we introduce SEM.KOM, a prototypical implementation based on standardized Web service technologies.
