    Experimental observations of nonlinear vibration localization in a cyclic chain of weakly coupled nonlinear oscillators
    Experimental results on nonlinear vibration localization in a cyclic chain of weakly coupled oscillators with clearance nonlinearity are reported. Numerical modelling and analysis complements the experimental study. A reduced order model is derived and numerical analysis based on the harmonic balance method demonstrates the existence of multiple classes of stable spatially localized nonlinear vibration states. The experiments agree very well with the numerical results. The findings suggest that vibration localization due to fundamentally nonlinear effects may also arise in mechanical structures with relevance in engineering.

    Nonlinear vibration localisation in a symmetric system of two coupled beams
    We report nonlinear vibration localisation in a system of two symmetric weakly coupled nonlinear oscillators. A two degree-of-freedom model with piecewise linear stiffness shows bifurcations to localised solutions. An experimental investigation employing two weakly coupled beams touching against stoppers for large vibration amplitudes confirms the nonlinear localisation.

    Reconstruction of governing equations from vibration measurements for geometrically nonlinear systems
    (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2019-08-05) ; ; ; ;
    Data-driven system identification procedures have recently enabled the reconstruction of governing differential equations from vibration signal recordings. In this contribution, the sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics is applied to structural dynamics of a geometrically nonlinear system. First, the methodology is validated against the forced Duffing oscillator to evaluate its robustness against noise and limited data. Then, differential equations governing the dynamics of two weakly coupled cantilever beams with base excitation are reconstructed from experimental data. Results indicate the appealing abilities of data-driven system identification: underlying equations are successfully reconstructed and (non-)linear dynamic terms are identified for two experimental setups which are comprised of a quasi-linear system and a system with impacts to replicate a piecewise hardening behavior, as commonly observed in contacts.

    Dissipative solitons in forced cyclic and symmetric structures
    The emergence of localised vibrations in cyclic and symmetric rotating structures, such as bladed disks of aircraft engines, has challenged engineers in the past few decades. In the linear regime, localised states may arise due to a lack of symmetry, as for example induced by inhomogeneities. However, when structures deviate from the linear behaviour, e.g. due to material nonlinearities, geometric nonlinearities like large deformations, or other nonlinear elements like joints or friction interfaces, localised states may arise even in perfectly symmetric structures. In this paper, a system consisting of coupled Duffing oscillators with linear viscous damping is subjected to external travelling wave forcing. The system may be considered a minimal model for bladed disks in turbomachinery operating in the nonlinear regime, where such excitation may arise due to imbalance or aerodynamic excitation. We demonstrate that near the resonance, in this non-conservative regime, localised vibration states bifurcate from the travelling waves. Complex bifurcation diagrams result, comprising stable and unstable dissipative solitons. The localised solutions can also be continued numerically to a conservative limit, where solitons bifurcate from the backbone curves of the travelling waves at finite amplitudes.

    Multistability and localization in forced cyclic symmetric structures modelled by weakly-coupled Duffing oscillators
    Many engineering structures are composed of weakly coupled sectors assembled in a cyclic and ideally symmetric configuration, which can be simplified as forced Duffing oscillators. In this paper, we study the emergence of localized states in the weakly nonlinear regime. We show that multiple spatially localized solutions may exist, and the resulting bifurcation diagram strongly resembles the snaking pattern observed in a variety of fields in physics, such as optics and fluid dynamics. Moreover, in the transition from the linear to the nonlinear behaviour isolated branches of solutions are identified. Localization is caused by the hardening effect introduced by the nonlinear stiffness, and occurs at large excitation levels. Contrary to the case of mistuning, the presented localization mechanism is triggered by the nonlinearities and arises in perfectly homogeneous systems.

    Computation of quasi-periodic localised vibrations in nonlinear cyclic and symmetric structures using harmonic balance methods
    In this paper we develop a fully numerical approach to compute quasi-periodic vibrations bifurcating from nonlinear periodic states in cyclic and symmetric structures. The focus is on localised oscillations arising from modulationally unstable travelling waves induced by strong external excitations. The computational strategy is based on the periodic and quasi-periodic harmonic balance methods together with an arc-length continuation scheme. Due to the presence of multiple localised states, a new method to switch from periodic to quasi-periodic states is proposed. The algorithm is applied to two different minimal models for bladed disks vibrating in large amplitudes regimes. In the first case, each sector of the bladed disk is modelled by a single degree of freedom, while in the second application a second degree of freedom is included to account for the disk inertia. In both cases the algorithm has identified and tracked multiple quasi-periodic localised states travelling around the structure in the form of dissipative solitons.

    Solitons in cyclic and symmetric structures
    © The Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc. 2019. This research focuses on localised states arising from modulationally unstable plane waves in non-conservative cyclic and symmetric structures. The main application is on vibrations of bladed-disks of aircraft engines experiencing nonlinear effects, such as large displacements, friction dissipation, and/or complex fluid-structure interactions. The investigation is based on a minimal model composed of a chain of linearly damped Duffing oscillators under external travelling wave excitation. The computed results are based on two strategies: (1) a Non-Linear Schrödinger Equation (NLSE) approximation; and (2) the periodic and quasi-periodic Harmonic Balance Methods (HBM). In both cases, the results show that unstable plane waves may self-modulate, leading to stable and unstable single and multiple solitons configurations.

    Dark solitons, modulation instability and breathers in a chain of weakly nonlinear oscillators with cyclic symmetry
    In the aerospace industry the trend for light-weight structures and the resulting complex dynamic behaviours currently challenge vibration engineers. In many cases, these light-weight structures deviate from linear behaviour, and complex nonlinear phenomena can be expected. We consider a cyclically symmetric system of coupled weakly nonlinear undamped oscillators that could be considered a minimal model for different cyclic and symmetric aerospace structures experiencing large deformations. The focus is on localised vibrations that arise from wave envelope modulation of travelling waves. For the defocussing parameter range of the approximative nonlinear evolution equation, we show the possible existence of dark solitons and discuss their characteristics. For the focussing parameter range, we characterise modulation instability and illustrate corresponding nonlinear breather dynamics. Furthermore, we show that for stronger nonlinearity or randomness in initial conditions, transient breather-type dynamics and decay into bright solitons appear. The findings suggest that significant vibration localisation may arise due to mechanisms of nonlinear modulation dynamics.
