    A model-based approach for the methodical development and configuration of modular product families
    (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2023-08-31) ; ; ;
    This paper shows how a methodical development and configuration of modular product family concepts and their effects on economic targets can be implemented in SysML. For this purpose, different sources of inconsistency between different methodical tools are highlighted and the need for research is shown. As a solution approach, a methodical framework is presented, which can be used to implement product development methods for the developing of modular product family modeling by means of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) in the modeling language SysML. By applying the framework, it is shown on the one hand how a product family of vacuum cleaner robots as a simple example can be modularized in a methodical, model-based manner. On the other hand, a configuration system and an impact model of modular product families are connected with the system model and applied to a product family of laser systems as an industrial use case. This made it clear that the framework can be used to model various methodical topics of product family modeling in a consistent manner, to enable higher-level analyses with the use of MBSE tools. This can reduce errors, decrease effort and increase traceability across different methodical tools.

    Neue Ansätze zur Entwicklung innovativer und nachhaltiger Bauweisen in der Flugzeugkabine
    (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrt - Lilienthal-Oberth e.V. (DGLR), 2022-09) ; ; ; ;
    Cost pressures and the growing need for sustainability in the aviation industry are placing particular demands on the aircraft cabin and its design. This paper therefore presents new approaches to meet these aspects and to develop innovative and sustainable designs for the aircraft cabin. Furthermore, the potential is shown, which can be realized by the simultaneous consideration of different areas and the implementation of a hybrid design.

    Modeling of an interface between system models and FEM models for the support of model-based development in modular lightweight design for aircraft cabins
    (Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2022-05) ; ; ;
    The modular lightweight design attempts to reconcile the partially conflicting goals between modularization and lightweight design in order to establish a harmonized modular hybrid design. This requires a close exchange of the resulting development data between the two areas. In this contribution a concept for an interface for the data exchange between system models and FEM models is presented and successfully implemented in the Cameo Systems Modeler and applied to examples from the aircraft cabin. With the interface the homogenization step of modular lightweight design can be performed.

    Methodical approach for the model-based development of aircraft cabin product families under consideration of lightweight and cost-based design
    (Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2022-05) ; ; ;
    Aircraft cabin monuments must be optimized in terms of lightweight design, cost structure and variance. Model-based approaches support the aircraft data and help to modify them consistently during further development. In this paper, a holistic methodological approach for product families of aircraft cabin development is shown, which integrates lightweight and cost-efficient aspects, in addition to the variance focus. For this purpose, the development of cost-efficient and ligthweight optimized cabin modules is supported in a model-based way.

    Using MBSE for the enhancement of consistency and continuity in modular product-service-system architectures
    (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2021-08-17) ; ; ;
    Within emerging markets, ensuring the competitiveness of manufacturing companies is crucial to their success. The integration of new business possibilities, such as Product-Service-Systems (PSS) can provide one suitable solution. Especially within the architecture development process, large amounts of interconnected data and data types need to be processed and versioned. This leads to a significant lack of data consistency and continuity along the development process of modular PSS architectures. This lack of consistency and continuity leads to a process being prone to errors, representing a significant negative impact onto the company’s value-added stream. We provide one possible solution to these issues by presenting a PSS architecture modularization approach based upon the modularization methods of the Integrated PKT-Approach. Using concepts of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) for modelling these architectures, automated and dynamic analyses of the architecture for the iteration and harmonization of the PSS architecture under development are enabled. The at first generically described approach is further detailed in the second part of this contribution by applying it to an industry case study for mobile laser welding systems. As a result, a clear support for the visualization of architecture iteration aspects as well as for the enhancement of data consistency and continuity is given.

    Digital twins of product families in aviation based on an MBSE-assisted approach
    (Elsevier, 2021-06-02) ; ;
    In this paper an approach to combine the basic concept of Digital Twins with research in product family development applied to civil aviation is presented. Concomitant benefits but also challenges regarding the management of information are introduced as well as the possibility to solve them by using the tools and methods of Model-Based Systems Engineering. As this conjoins three different topics, the basics of each of them in reference to the approach is introduced before they are subsequently combined. In the process, respective past and future research is presented as well.

    Model-based application of the methodical process for modular lightweight design of aircraft cabins
    In this paper the concept of the modular lightweight design as a method to combine the opposing views of lightweight-optimized- and modular product family-design is presented. Therefor specifics of these views are presented based on the use-case of civil aviation and aircraft cabins. Subsequently the concept of modular lightweight design and its concomitant benefits and challenges are outlined as well as the Model-Based Systems Engineering to assist the implementation of the approach into the product development processes for developing the modular hybrid design.

    Inconsistency Management for Product Families with many Varients through a Model-Based Approach in Modular Lightweight Design
    (Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2020-06-11) ; ;
    In methodical product development, numerous data are used and linked with each other, especially variant-related data. This paper presents a model-based solution for avoiding inconsistencies in the development of product families with many variants and extends it to modular lightweight design. In addition, the inconsistencies in methodical product development were classified and solution approaches were shown. Thus, inconsistencies can be avoided with the presented elaborated data model for an integrated product and process model based on the presented procedure.

    Consistent Modelling of the Impact Model of Modular Product Structures with Linking Boundary Conditions in SysML
    (Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2019-07-26) ; ; ;
    The challenges related to product structures, which go hand in hand with megatrends such as individualization, can be met with the modularity of product structures. With the help of various modularization methods, modular product structures are created with regard to different goals. There are many references to the effects of modular product structures on life phases and economic targets in the literature. These effects were collected in previous research in a generic impact model. Since there is a lot of information about the effects, such models become very comprehensive and thereby difficult to handle. For this reason, the impact model is consistently generated using SysML. The adaptation to company scenarios is possible through the use of simulations with which, for example, company-related and product-related boundary conditions can be controlled by means of a User Interface.
