    Design for durability : designing with advanced ceramics
    (Design Society, 2013-08) ;
    The demand of sustainable products - not only in transport, but in manufacturing and building industry - results to the necessary of improving the reliability. The MTBF-index (mean time between failures) and MTBM (mean time between maintenance) have been introduced, to include the reliability of products in the profitability analysis. On the technical side, international standards describe how to test the reliability of a product or component by means of constant failure rate or constant failure intensity. The demand of sustainable products results in a redesign with new targets. The challenge for the designer is to (re-)design the technical system with improved material and/or optimized shape. Therefore the paper will discuss the material selection methods for a "design for durability". As a consequence it will show the influence of embodiment design when designing with advanced ceramics. The autor has worked on failure criteria of multi-axial loaded ceramics and investigated several cyclic and static load cases on ceramic structure specimen. Based on this experiences a guideline will be proposed for the embodiment design evaluation of cermic parts.

    Auslegung von keramischen Strukturbauteilen unter mehraxialer statischer und zyklischer Beanspruchung
    Die Werkstoffwissenschaften haben in den letzten Jahrzehnten viele verbesserte und neue Materialien entwickelt. Viele Innovationen sind ohne neue Werkstoffe undenkbar. Zu diesen neuen Materialien gehören die Hochleistungskeramiken, die nicht nur thermische und elektrische, sondern auch mechanische Eigenschaften aufweisen, die für spezielle Anwendungen im Maschinenbau besonders geeignet sind. In der Produktentwicklung stößt der Werkstoff Keramik jedoch oft auf Unverständnis, da sowohl die Herstellprozesse als auch die Verbindungstechniken und Berechnungsverfahren von denen der gängigen Werkstoffe abweichen. In dieser Arbeit wird daher die Verwendung von Keramik im Maschinenbau systematisch aufgezeigt. Die Auslegungsgrundlagen der Bruchmechanik werden auf die Anwendungen im Maschinenbau übertragen, mit eigenen Versuchsdaten untermauert und in eine Auslegungsvorschrift überführt. Nach einem historischen Abriss über den Einsatz von Keramik im Maschinenbau werden die derzeitigen Auslegungsmethoden von keramischen Strukturbauteilen zusammengefasst. Es werden empirische Untersuchungen zur mehraxialen Beanspruchbarkeit von Oxidkeramik sowie Siliciumcarbid durchgeführt. Der Festigkeitsnachweis der FKM-Richtlinie des Forschungskuratoriums Maschinenbau wird als Grundlage genommen, um in einer analogen Vorgehensweise die Einflussfaktoren beim Konstruieren mit keramischen Werkstoffen aufzuzeigen. Zwei Anwendungsbeispiele - ein thermisch beanspruchter Stirling-Kolben sowie ein tribologisch beanspruchtes Radiallager - zeigen exemplarisch die konstruktiven Möglichkeiten der Produktentwicklung auf. Dieser Band der Hamburger Schriftenreihe Produktentwicklung und Konstruktionstechnik dient als Grundlage für die Konstruktion um keramische Bauteile in eine - meist metallische - Systemumgebung integrieren zu können.

    Determination of the multiaxial failure criteria for alumina ceramics under tension–torsion test
    Failure probability of ceramic components in multiaxial stress state can be predicted using the uniaxial test results (e.g. tension test, 4-point-bending test) when a suitable multiaxial criterion, which introduces the triaxiality of stress state, is known. In this article, tension–torsion tests were performed with alumina (Alsint 99.7) specimens from a standard manufacturer under two different load cases. Next experimental results were compared with the numerically calculated effective volume and effective surface values according to different multiaxial failure criteria. It was concluded that the specimens failed due to surface flaws and the normal stress criterion is the most appropriate criterion for the strength prediction of alumina ceramics under multiaxial stress state. Furthermore, it was shown that the Weibull modulus does not play a big role for the prediction of strength of alumina ceramics.
