Measurement setup for industrial communication techniques under electromagnetic interference
A increasing number of sensor networks are utilising industrial Ethernet standards. Many applications in factory and process automation require real time capabilities. Therefore, robustness is a key feature in industrial communication. The major source of noise are variable speed drives that generate electromagnetic disturbances. In this study, we propose a new application-related approach of testing communication techniques for conducted data transmission in an industrial environment. The approach consists of three configurable parts. The first part is the generation of electromagnetic interference (EMI) by frequency inverters with configurable drive profiles. The second part is EMI coupling to the communication line, which is realized as in-cable coupling and cross-cable coupling. The last part is the communication and measurement system. For each part a concept and a realization is proposed. With exemplary measurements we show the superior possibilities of this experimental approach.

Experimental analysis of frequency inverter noise on single pair Ethernet communication
Industrial Ethernet in factory and process automation requires real time capabilities. Therefore, robustness is a key feature in industrial communication. The major source of noise are variable speed drives that generate impulsive noise. In this publication, we propose an application-related classification of the impact of industrial electromagnetic interference on data transmission. This classification is based on the modelling of a specific type of application. We model the application via variable speed drives. The drive profiles are taken from actual applications in intralogistics. We describes and measure noise emitted by frequency inverters. The measurement setup is described. It comprises generation of noise by frequency inverters, coupling noise from mains to communication cabling and measuring the noise and its effect on communication. Single pair Ethernet (SPE) cables, modulation and line coding are used according to 802.3cg. The measurements indicate that the main noise source is the switching of the power electronics. Different rotation speeds and torques have an effect on the time-variant appearance of noise but not on noise level. With the measurements, we analyse the impact of the noise on a 2-PAM-Communication.

Mitigation of Coloured Impulsive noise in OFDM receiver
Power line communication (PLC) in factory and process automation requires real time capabilities. Therefore, robustness is a key feature in industrial communication. For such power line communication, a common scheme is Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). The major source of noise are variable speed drives that generate impulsive noise. OFDM spreads impulsive noise on several sub-carriers and weaken its impact on BER. It is known that with decreasing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) the BER of all affected sub-carries is rising. There are several non-linear strategies like clipping, nulling and hybrid clipping-nulling to mitigate this impulsive noise. So far, the level of the received samples is used as filter-criterion for these filters. We propose a novel mitigation scheme for coloured impulsive noise based on finite impulse response (FIR) filters. Simulations with coloured impulsive noise show the decreased BER with this novel approach. Furthermore, we measure impulsive noise from variable speed drives and use actual readings to verify the effectiveness of the proposed mitigation scheme.

Measurement Platform for Physical-Layer Analysis of Industrial and Automotive Ethernet
Robustness of communication is essential for many automotive and industrial Ethernet applications due to real-time and safety features that are required. Existing data transmission structures have to be used for higher transmission rates in some application. Likewise, some new installation require cost-effective cabling with non-ideal transmission characteristics such as unshielded single twisted pair. This enables economic feasibility of Industrial Internet of Things networking of simple sensors and actors. We introduce a universal platform for physical layer analysis for such physical layers. It covers communication channels up to some 10 Mbit/s, which are typically found in industrial and automotive Ethernet. We present a combined soft- and hardware solution. It comprises an end-to-end communication and facilities spectrum, correlation and constellation analysis. Application to and results for unshielded twisted pair cabling are presented.
