Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Interface standardization and cost of complexity assessment: enhancements to the impact model of modular product familiesThis contribution proposes two complementary extensions to the established Impact Model of Modular Product Families to improve the economic assessment of modular architectures. The first extension addresses the model’s input parameters by explicitly incorporating interface standardization and directly linking modularity characteristics to life‑cycle‑specific economic target values. This enhances the traceability between development decisions and their economic effects. The second extension expands the set of economic target values by introducing variety‑induced Cost of Complexity as a dedicated dimension, integrating time‑ and cost‑related impact chains into a consolidated cost perspective. To support systematic identification and prioritization of relevant cost effects, a Cost Impact Matrix is introduced, mapping causal impact chains to generic, company‑independent cost categories. Together, these extensions strengthen the analytical power of the Impact Model and provide a more transparent basis for early‑stage evaluation and decision‑making in modular product family development.Publicationtype: Conference Paper6 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publicationtype: Book Part41 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Determination of the right level of detail: A methodical approach for life cycle costing integration in product development(Elsevier, 2025); ; ;Wurst, Johanna; In Life cycle costing the processing of the high amount of cost data is challenging for industrial companies. Depending on the existing product and business model the cost structure and the relevance of different cost types differs. To minimize the effort for data processing in product development, this paper presents a methodical approach to determine the needed level of detail concerning the consideration of life cycle cost. The necessary level of detail for business models can be defined by converting the existing cost data into a holistic cost model. The methodical approach presented is applied to an exemplary business model.Publicationtype: Conference Paper22 18 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Towards an approach for the target-size-oriented selection and adaptation of methods for the development of modular product familiesIncreasing customer demands and intensifying competition lead many companies to expand their product portfolios continuously, posing challenges for manufacturing firms. Modular product families offer a solution by maintaining external variety while reducing internal variety. Modular product families impact all product life phases and economic targets like time, cost, quality, and flexibility. However, selecting methods for developing modular product families based on economic objectives is challenging due to method intricacies, inconsistent documentation, and vague economic goal addressing. This paper proposes a method selection and adaptation approach for modular product family development to address this problem. This approach uses a methodstep-database from our own preliminary work to support the target-size-oriented adaptation.Publicationtype: Conference Paper23 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Towards a Framework for the Continuous Decision-Making Concerning Variety-Induced Cost of Complexity in the Product Generation Development ProcessExisting approaches for considering and evaluating product family concept alternatives in terms of variety-induced cost of complexity focus only on the subsequent evaluation of total concepts and are not integrated into the product generation development process. In response to escalating product complexity and its associated costs, a comprehensive framework for integrating variety-induced cost of complexity as a target value into the product generation development process is to be developed. Emphasizing a continuous consideration of variety-induced cost of complexity in the early phases of product generation development, the framework aims to support the cost target-orientated development of modular product families. To avoid a cost and time intensive subsequent evaluation regarding cost of complexity, the framework ensures the proactive management of these throughout the product generation development, enabling more strategic and cost-effective design decisions.Publicationtype: Conference Paper27 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Development of a dynamic complexity costs assessment approach in aviation development(The Design Society, 2023-09-15); ; ; The development of avionic products is subject to high-cost pressure due to increasing international competition and small batch sizes. To compete on the global market in a long-term view, potentially arising complexity costs must already be considered in the early phases of the product generation development process. Existing approaches to cost evaluation concentrate on a subsequent evaluation of developed product family concepts alternatives. To avoid a cost- and time-intensive subsequent evaluation of complexity costs, a generic approach for the dynamic consideration of complexity costs within the product generation development process is to be developed by integrating existing approaches for the product generation development and evaluation of variety-induced complexity costs.Publicationtype: Conference Paper54
