    Optimization-based design of rotating packed beds with zickzack packings
    (Elsevier, 2020-08) ; ;
    Due to the fast development of the market in the chemical industry, more flexible and efficient equipment is obligatory. High-gravity contactors in form of Rotating Packed Beds (RPBs) have the potential to meet these needs since they offer an enhanced mixing by imposing centrifugal forces resulting in an intensified mass and energy transport. With the rotational speed as an additional degree of freedom, RPBs offer faster start-up times and an enlarged operating window. Despite the increasing scientific work in the areas of experimental investigations and modeling, industrial applications are still limited due to a lack of reliable methods for scale-up and design. In respect to the latter, this work presents a nested superstructure approach for the optimization-based design of RPBs with zickzack packings that is further demonstrated for the dehydration of methanol.

    Recent advances in experimental techniques for flow and mass transfer analyses in thermal separation systems
    Modelling flow and mass transfer of thermal separation equipment constitutes one of the most challenging tasks in fluids process engineering. The difficulty of this task comes from the multiscale multiphase flow phenomena in rather complex geometries. Both analysis of flow and mass transfer on different scales as well as validation of models and simulation results require advanced experimental and measurement techniques. As a follow-up to intensive discussions during the 2019 Tutzing Symposium “Separation Units 4.0” a wide set of available modern experimental technologies is presented.

    Towards the Development of Advanced Packing Design for Distillation in Rotating Packed Beds
    The growing demand for flexible and compact separation technologies has promoted the application of high-gravity technology, like rotating packed beds (RPBs). Mass transfer characterization and packing design play an important role in the development of this technology. This article provides a systematic approach towards the evaluation of packing and the development of advanced packing design for distillation in RPBs. For the latter, an additive manufacturing approach is used to develop a new Zickzack packing for RPBs. The new packing provides better mass transfer at reduced pressure drop compared to available conventional packings, while being competitive in terms of mass transfer with the industrially applied rotating zigzag bed at significantly reduced pressure drop.

    A guide on the industrial application of rotating packed beds
    Rotating packed beds (RPBs) exploit centrifugal fields in order to improve separations and reactions. The reported advantages of RPBs compared to state of the art equipment for the mixing and contacting of different fluids are significant reductions in equipment volume, corresponding large capacities and improved selectivities. These benefits can be attributed to the intense micromixing of the fluids and the intense internal mass transfer between different phases. Further advantages of RPBs are fast dynamics resulting in a quick achievement of steady state operation, the possibility to process highly viscous fluids and the additional degree of freedom resulting from the variable rotational speed. Although various successful implementations of RPBs on an industrial scale have been reported, conclusive criteria and guidelines for the selection of RPBs are still missing. Consequently, they are seldomly considered during process design. In order to derive explicit criteria that indicate the suitability of an RPB, known industrial applications for gas-liquid, vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid contacting applications are analyzed in the present study. On this basis, distinctive decision trees are introduced in order to facilitate the identification of processes in which the use of an RPB is expected to be beneficial.

    Experimental investigation and design of rotating packed beds for distillation
    Improved separation efficiency and flexibility are of major importance in the downstream processing of liquid mixtures in the chemical industry, in order to respond to fluctuating demand and raw material quality. The application of the high gravity (HiGee) concept in Rotating Packed Beds (RPBs) has the potential to meet these requirements for the separation of liquid mixtures. The current work provides an analysis of the potential improvements gained by RPBs. The flexibility of RPBs is analyzed based on an experimental investigation, which evaluates the effect of rotational speed, different rotor configurations and F-factors on separation efficiency. Batch distillation experiments were performed in a single-stage pilot plant RPB with the ethanol-water system under total reflux conditions at atmospheric pressure. An analysis of the number of transfer units (NTU) reveals that separation efficiency in RPBs is not necessarily proportional to the rotational speed. There is rather an optimal rotational speed for each investigated rotor configuration. A maximum of 3.7 transfer units was achieved for a rotor with outer packing diameter of 0.36 m and an axial height of 0.01 m. Special emphasize in this experimental study is placed on the analysis of the contributions to mass transfer from the packing and the casing, which can contribute significantly to the overall mass transfer in RPBs.
