Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Investigations on the level ice resistance of ships with conventional bow shapesA literature study of existing methods for estimating the resistance of ships in ice is presented and a review of the influence of several ship particulars on the level ice resistance is made. The applicability of the Lindqvist method to vessels with conventional bow shapes is assessed, pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of the formulation. The concept of an improved method based on weighting factors is presented. Finally, recommendations for a model test campaign with an instrumented model are given in order to acquire sufficient knowledge to develop a revised method.Publicationtype: Conference Paper42 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Methodology for investigation of ice breaking performance(International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE), 2016-06); Understanding the influence of the ship hull design on the ship-ice interaction is essential for its assessment in an early design stage. Within the research project ProEis an investigation is carried out which is based on a holistic consideration of the ice breaking process. This paper aims to present an improved testing procedure to enable the development of a numerical simulation procedure that predicts the twoway coupled hydrodynamic interaction of the vessel with the turbulent nonlinear flow as well as the collision of the pre-broken ice and the ship hull and a companion tool which determines the bow ice-breaking pattern. Analysis results of the influence of different bow shape (parameters) on the breaking pattern are given followed by a first evaluation of the ice flow along the ship hull.Publicationtype: Conference Paper35 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Influence of bow design on ice breaking resistance(2016-06-01); One of the main contributions to the resistance in level ice is the breaking force which is mainly influenced by the bow shape, beside ice properties and the ship's speed. Understanding the influence of the bow shape on the ice breaking resistance is essential for the assessment of the hull form in an early design stage. However, at a first glance the bow shapes of modern ice breaking vessels seem to be quite similar. Thus, a need exists to evaluate the contribution of the ice breaking force to the resistance in ice methodically for different bow shapes. Since model tests are still the most reliable resistance prediction method, they form the basis for the analysis of the ice breaking process at the bow. Specifically, breaking patterns and geometric bow parameters are investigated. The findings are compared with the selected semi-empirical method of Lindqvist. On this basis the Lindqvist approach is evaluated with further model test results and theoretical considerations. Finally, refinements of the Lindqvist formula are suggested where appropriate based on the analysis.Publicationtype: Journal Article73
