Spatial load-bearing behaviour of combined steel sheetpiles
Combined sheet pile walls are mainly used in quay wall construction as a decisive load-bearing element. Applying the current design formats shows that arithmetically a large number of the existing quay walls are no longer stable, although these constructions correspond to tried and tested practice. The design is mostly done two-dimensionally with the assumption of an arching effect between the king piles, so that these take the earth pressure and the intermediate piles only take the water pressure. Insufficient information is available to describe the spatial load-bearing behavior of combined sheet pile walls. The aim of the research project is to record the actual load on the intermediate piles and king piles as a result of earth and water pressure, as well as their loading, taking into account their spatial system load-bearing effect. By clarifying the load transfer, overdimensioning of these components can be avoided. By including the spatial load-bearing effect of combined steel sheet pile walls including the anchoring, their design can be optimized.

Optimized design of combined steel sheet pile walls for the installation process and the final state
With the development of ship sizes, there are special requirements for the quay walls of port facilities. As part of this research project, investigations are to be carried out to improve the economic efficiency and safety of the dimensioning of combined sheet pile walls for the installation process and the final state. The stresses on the profile during installation have so far only been included in the profile selection as empirical experience. Investigations on this should provide holistic design criteria for the optimized profile selection, in order to ensure not only economic efficiency but also the damage-free and accurate insertion of the profiles. As part of the dimensioning of the final state, the potential of the piles of combined sheet piling remains unused with regard to the approach of the soil bedding and the partial welding of double piles. Based on the previous project P813, the profitability is to be improved. In addition, the compatibility of the design with the changes to torsional torsional buckling decided for EN 1993-1-1 should be ensured and the installation situation should be improved through more economical regulations in EN 1993-5. For the dimensioning of the intermediate piles, the consistency of the existing Annex C in EN 1993-5 and the concept of partially plastic moment resistances decided for EN 1993-1-1 should be ensured by means of an investigation. With EN 1993-5, EAU 2012 and the previous project, there are already approaches for the design of combined steel sheet pile walls that have been optimized with regard to their economic efficiency and application safety. Despite the improvements made, the potential for greater economy and application security remains unused. The same applies to the simplicity and thus applicability of the rules. This project is intended to make it usable and thus brings considerable benefits to SMEs in terms of economy and safety when using combined steel sheet piling.
