Cracks at thin electrodes are a known failure mode of piezoelectric actuators. For that reason the fracture mechanical parameters determining the stable crack grow for such interfacial cracks are of interest. The fracture mechanical parameters will be determined theoretically and experimentally. The measurement of the critical loads leading to crack growth are performed at 4-point bending specimens. Using the theoretical solution for the near tip crack field of the generalized two-dimensional problem the intensity factors will be defined. The determination of the critical intensity factors results from numerically calculated shape functions for the 4-point bending specimen. The crack closure integral gives the connection between the intensity parameters and the energy release rate.
