The practice of promoting information literacy through libraries as well as the contents and concepts of the idea of information literacy itself are modified through the constant change of the modern information environment. Coming from the French translation of "information literacy" as "culture de l´information“ and a critical view on previous ideas and activities of information literacy the usefulness of culture as a concept in the area of information is discussed. Within a cultural view on information (literacy) challenges forming the modern information and communication society like authenticity, memory and heritage, community, identity (also within the subject-specific culture of a discipline), creativity, power and diversity (in contrast to Google's monoculture) occur. A critical attitude to the information environment together with a background knowledge on the formation, functioning, and societal challenges of modern information and communication media, can be viewed as the basic essence of all efforts for information literacy, media competence, digital literacy, information culture, information education - whatever one like to take as guiding concept.
