Wind farms play a key role in the global transition to renewable energy, but their efficiency is significantly affected by the choice between AC and DC technologies for the collector grid. This study compares this efficiency in offshore wind farms by quantifying energy losses through simulation models and leveraging real-world operational data, including weather and grid measurements. The advantages and disadvantages of DC technology compared to traditional AC systems are evaluated and the variation in energy losses in DC wind farms under different operating conditions are highlighted. Understanding these differences is critical to recognizing the potential of DC technology to increase wind farm efficiency, especially in variable wind environments, and provides valuable insights into the practical and economic implications of adopting DC collector grids for wind farms.
