    Model based systems engineering in modular design-a potential analysis using portal type scraper reclaimers as an example
    (Elsevier, 2016-06) ; ;
    Many industries have to react progressively to the increasing customer requirements regarding the individualization of products. As a consequence, companies are using more and more standardization methods, such as modular, platform or type series design. This leads to an increased complexity of product development processes and thus to the necessity of concepts which allow a consistent representation of constructions kits. Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) can support the development of such systems. A case study carried out in cooperation with thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions shows the potential of the approach using the industrial sector, the machinery and plant engineering industry as an example.

    Process types of customisation and personalisation in design for additive manufacturing applied to vascular models
    (Elsevier, 2016-06) ;
    Manufacturing companies face high demand for products that fulfil individual customer desires. Recent improvements in additive manufacturing (AM) enable the fabrication of customer-specific components of a product. This paper presents a categorisation of design processes for customised and personalised products through the use of AM in three process types: special design, specific adaptation, and standardised individualisation. The characteristics of design processes are examined in medical development of vascular models integrated into a modular neurovascular training setup. The paper considers how initial customer involvement and preplanning of customer-specification influence the design process for varying degrees of individualisation enabled by additive manufacturing.

    IPeM-integrated product engineering model in context of product generation engineering
    Divergent customer requirements demand a product portfolio, which needs to be strategically coordinated. Furthermore, products are developed in generations. Thus, a coordination of the different generations is needed. For a successful support, process models can be used. The integrated-Product-engineering-Model (iPeM) is an integrated approach, which aims to fill in the gap between process management and engineering design. Building on an empirical study of the use of the iPeM in the last 10 years, the iPeM has been modified. This includes an adaption of the activities and an extension from the second to the third dimension. There are four different layers added: product generations, strategy as well as production- and validation system. The adapted model allows inductively refining the theory and deductively creating of boundary conditions for the research on product development.
