Data supplement for publication: Lagrangian µ-Particle Tracking Velocimetry Analysis of Microscale Flow over Structured Surfaces
The TUHH Open Research (TORE) repository contains the raw and processed data underlying the publication "Lagrangian µ-Particle Tracking Velocimetry Analysis of Microscale Flow over Structured Surfaces". The dataset includes experimental particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) data, the design files of the investigated structured surfaces, and the corresponding MATLAB analysis scripts. The study investigates flow over micro- and nanostructured surfaces as a basis for improving (bio)reactor design, with a focus on mass transport near the surface. µ-PTV was used to obtain three-dimensional, time-resolved particle trajectories and velocity fields in a microreactor. The Lagrangian analysis shows that rectangular microgrooves increase particle contact with the wall. In particular, when the microgrooves are oriented perpendicular to the flow. The analysis reveals near-surface phenomena such as particle trapping and localized recirculation that are not captured by averaged Eulerian velocities alone. The dataset is accompanied by a detailed REadMe file and a separate folder structure file, which describe the file organization, the naming conventions used throughout the repository, and how the individual files relate to the results reported in the associated publication.

These dissolved process gases transfer from the liquid phase to the gaseous phase countercurrent to the typically desired mass transfer of gas to liquid. In process design, the resulting change in the composition of the gaseous phase is usually neglected, although a temporal change in the composition of the gaseous phase can directly influence the mass transfer performance over time. The current fundamental study quantifies the mass transfer performance of oxygen bubbles to liquid phases saturated with another gas. For this purpose, the oxygen mass transfer from a bubble to degassed, helium-, nitrogen-, argon- and carbon dioxide-saturated water is studied. Light Sheet Fluorescence Microscopy is used as imaging system for Planar Laser-induced Fluorescence measurements of dissolved oxygen concentration fields, delivering local instantaneous Sherwood numbers, diffusion coefficients and mass Transfer coefficients. For the first time, the study showcases that the mass transfer performance from a gaseous dispersed to a liquid continuous phase is independent of time if mass transfer occurs in one direction only. If mass transfer occurs in both directions, the mass transfer performance of the dispersed phase is significantly lower and its time dependence higher to liquids containing gaseous species with high solubilities, such as carbon dioxide in water. Furthermore, the results suggest that applying intrinsic values, such as diffusion or mass transfer coefficients, obtained for binary systems in multicomponent systems can lead to high uncertainty.

Data and code for A Method for Optical Quantification of Local Oxygen Limitations in Multiphase Bioreactors
    (2026-06-26)
This dataset contains the raw and processed experimental data, along with the analysis code, for the publication titled “A Method for Optical Quantification of Local Oxygen Limitations in Multiphase Bioreactors.” The data were obtained from optical measurements based on the reversible redox reaction of methylene blue in gas–liquid stirred tank bioreactors. They include time-resolved colourisation data used to derive spatial information on oxygen supply heterogeneities under varying hydrodynamic conditions (e.g. different impeller speeds). The dataset is structured into raw measurement files, processed results, and scripts for data evaluation and visualisation, enabling reproducibility and further analysis. (2026-04)

Data supplement for publication: Comprehensive study of 3D liquid flow fields in additively manufactured structures for SMART reactors using large-scale vertical magnetic resonance imaging and computational fluid dynamics
The TUHH Open Research (TORE) repository contains raw and processed data associated with the publication "Comprehensive study of 3D liquid flow fields in additively manufactured structures for SMART reactors using large-scale vertical magnetic resonance imaging and computational fluid dynamics". The dataset comprises experimental magnetic resonance imaging velocimetry data, numerical results from OpenFOAM simulations, and corresponding design files. The publication investigates the flow behaviour in additively manufactured TPMS structures using a large-bore vertical 3 T MRI system. Cross-validation between experimental measurements and numerical simulations is performed. Three different TPMS geometries are analysed within the Darcy-Forchheimer regime. The folder is accompanied by a ReadMe file and a separate folder structure file, which provide detailed information on file organisation, naming conventions, and their relation to the reported results.

Simulated Lagrangian trajectory data in a lab-scaled stirred tank reactor
    (2026-04-14)
This MATLAB data file contains the Lagrangian trajectory data of in total 502775 particles in a lab-scale stirred tank reactor with a volume of 2.8 L and a stirrer frequency is 252 rpm. The time over which the data reaches equals the time necessary for ten stirrer revolutions, hence 2.38 s, starting at 60 s after initialisation of the process. The time difference between two data points is 0.01 s. For a detailed description of the system, please refer to the publication Weiland, C.; Steuwe, E.; Fitschen, J.; Hoffmann, M.; Schlüter, M.; Padberg-Gehle, K.; von Kameke, A. (2023). Data for publication: Experimental studies on microscopic, multiphase transport phenomena: Novel applications of light sheet fluorescence microscopy
Over the past two decades, light sheet fluorescence microscopy has developed to a powerful tool for studies of dynamics in biological systems. In a new development, we apply light sheet fluorescence microscopy as a novel experimental measurement technology within the field of multiphase process engineering and fluid dynamics. The technology enables a number of novel studies of single- and multiphase transport phenomena on a microscopic scale. In the current publication, we introduce the first implementation of light sheet fluorescence microscopy in the field and demonstrate its applicability on one exemplary measurement of diffusive oxygen mass transfer from an oxygen bubble to degassed water. The results prove that such measurements can be conducted with a high spatial resolution with a submicron pixel pitch and enable precise studies on microscopic transport phenomena. Besides measurements of mass transfer, on which we lay the focus here, light sheet fluorescence microscopy further enables studies of fluid dynamics on a microscopic scale.
