Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Prediction of local losses of low re flows in elastic porous mediaAn isotropic elastic porous structure whose pore geometry is regular (periodically uniform) will experience non-uniform deformation when a viscous fluid flows through the matrix under the influence of an externally applied pressure difference. In such a case, the flow field will experience a non-uniform pressure gradient whose magnitude increases in the direction of bulk flow. In this study, a method is presented that predicts local losses of the flow through a porous matrix whose geometry varies in the direction of flow. Employing an asymptotic expansion about the variation in geometry provides an expression relating local hydraulic permeability to local pore geometry. In this way the pressure field is able to be determined without requiring the explicit solution of the flow field. In this study a test case is presented showing that the local pressure losses are predicted to be within 0.5% of the losses determined from the solution to the Navier-Stokes Equations. The approach can be used to simplify the coupled fluid-solid problem of flow through elastic porous media by replacing the need to explicitly solve the flow field.Publicationtype: Journal Article66 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Fabrication and characterization of deformable porous matrices with controlled pore characteristics(Springer, 2014-12-09); ; ; ; The subject of this study concerns a method of manufacture of porous media for which the solid matrix is capable of experiencing deformation under the influence of the flow field. Conventionally, the matrix design parameters, elasticity and pore geometry, cannot be precisely controlled and the choice of parameters is limited to existing available media. Here a solution is provided that uses an indirect solid-free form fabrication process that combines 3D Printing with an infused Polydimethylsiloxane elastomer to provide a highly deformable matrix with controlled pore architecture. The manufacturing method is presented in detail. Local microscopy analysis of the manufactured matrix shows that the method has a high capability to accurately create pore structures at length scales as low as 0.75 mm. Experimental flow measurements further validate that the intended pore geometry is able to be reproduced in highly deformable matrices. The experimentally determined permeability of the deformable matrix is determined to agree with the intended within 95 %.Publicationtype: Journal Article79 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , One dimensional transient heat conduction in segmented fin-like geometries with distinct discrete peripheral convectionThis study presents the solution of transient heat conduction in a composite extended surface whose periphery is exposed to convection and whose thermophysical properties experience discontinuities along the longitudinal direction. The solution development uses the natural analytic approach and formats the description so that the constants of integration of each of the composite segments are expressed in terms of the previous segment's eigenfunctions. This allows the solution to be "built" in a very systematic and sequential manner. A three-segment case study is also provided to show the simplicity and applicability of the implementation of this solution.Publicationtype: Journal Article57
