Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Artificially Interactive Individualized Genetic Algorithms (AIIGA) for Gestalt Analysis: Evolutionary algorithms enhanced with sAI in architectural design(2025-09); ; This research is concerned with the automation of the user interventional aspect within interactive genetic algorithms (IGA) as already explored in previous publications by the authors considering their use for Gestalt analyses and generative design optimization. For the first time, this research presents a prototypical system that is an artificially interactive individualized genetic algorithm (AIIGA) to be used in the architectural design process. It presents an evolution of interactive genetic algorithms (IGA) that use Gestalt analytical algorithms and integrate so-called AI into said algorithms to propose a new systematic approach. The latter is here called artificially interactive individualized genetic algorithm (AIIGA), replacing human intervention with genetic algorithm procedures, as is the case in IGA with the intervention of a so-called artificial intelligence building block, optimized for this purpose. Combining generative and cognitive abilities in semi-automated design processes within AIIGA systems as presented in this paper is a powerful potential for a wide variety of design process configurations.Publicationtype: Conference Paper35 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Urban street space analysis with spherical box-counting: holistic digital gestalt analysis of architecture in urban spaceSpherical box-counting of urban street spaces is a novel method developed and refined by the authors to produce highly specific topological fractal fingerprinting of architecture in relation to observer position and in the context of the accompanying surroundings. The use of 360-degree spherical panoramas as input data and basis for fractal measurement lies at the center of this method. A holistic approach toward architectural and urban design, balancing between simplicity and complexity of all Gestalt qualities, needs to take the influence of every (especially man-made) object in view into consideration. This research shows that Gestalt complexity is linked to the observerʼs viewpoint as well as the Gestalt complexity of all objects visible from the viewerʼs position. This is another decisive step toward holistic fractal and overall digital Gestalt analysis of urban spaces.Publicationtype: Conference Paper14 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Customer configuration systems as a design task : architectural education and context-driven product configurator design(2023-06)This research deals with customer configuration systems for architecture and design products as a design task for students. The design of a product configurator accompanying the parametric design of a piece of furniture or an architectural element has been introduced in several courses over the last ten years at the HafenCity University Hamburg and at Hamburg University of Technology by the author. These studios are presented as case studies to discuss the didactic potential that lies in designing customer oriented product configuration systems with students of design and architecture.Publicationtype: Conference Paper16 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Spherical Box-Counting: Combining 360° Panoramas with Fractal Analysis(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2023-04-14); In this paper, a new box-counting method to achieve a highly specific topological fingerprinting of architecture in relation to the position of the observer and in the context of its surroundings is proposed. Central to this method is the use of 360-degree spherical panoramas as a basis for fractal measurement. Thus, a number of problems of the comparative analysis of the fractal dimension in the field of architecture are explicitly and implicitly addressed, first and foremost being the question of choosing image boundaries while considering adjacent vegetation, urban elements, and other visually present objects for Gestalt analysis of a specific building. Second, the problem of distance and perspective as part of the aesthetic experience based on viewer and object location were taken into account and are addressed. The implications of the use of a spherical perspective as described in this research are also highly relevant for other methods of aesthetic measures in architecture, including those implementing collaborative design processes guided by digital tools and machine learning, among others.Publicationtype: Journal ArticleScopus© Citations 2 43 296 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Multilayered Complexity Evaluation within Configuratorsfor Design: Responsible collaborative systems for architectural and product design(2022-09); This paper describes the concept of integrating several complexity evaluation methods, previously developed and tested by the authors, into one product configurator through a technical prototype. In this case variations of an online configurator for design products based on a choice of these digital complexity evaluation methods developed between 2015 and 2020 are presented. This research shows that an integration of complexity evaluation for several Gestalt qualities in one product configurator is feasible, though the amount of aspects of each of these qualities and the necessary effort to be invested to achieve an integration that is suitable for customer use may vary. The concept is illustrated using a simple test case, i.e. an online shelf configurator.Publicationtype: Conference Paper14 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Spherical perspective in design education(2019)The spherical perspective has not yet been widely introduced into design education. Its ability to serve as a meta-class model of vanishing point perspective systems, giving a teacher the opportunity to present approximations of the straight linear perspective models (with one, two or three vanishing points) all in one system, is presented in this article. The mathematical basis for a spherical grid as a curvilinear approximation to one-eyed human vision and a didactic approach for its integration into design oriented perspective freehand drawing are also discussed.Publicationtype: Journal ArticleScopus© Citations 2 275 205 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
