Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Global optimization of superstructures and decision support via a universally applicable optimization toolThe simulation-based multi-objective structural and parameter optimization of continuous chemical production processes is a complex task. To provide a universally applicable optimization tool, the Advanced Process Optimizer was developed and intensively tested in cooperation with different industrial partners over several years. The superstructure can be directly built in a commercial flowsheet simulator. The resulting Generalized Disjunctive Programming formulation of the optimization problem was handled through a combination of newly developed and adapted methods. In order to validate the efficiency of the developed optimization tool the example of a dimethyl ether production process was chosen. The optimization results are compared to a reference solution achieved by conventional approaches and show a significant reduction of both the investment and operating costs.Publicationtype: Conference Paper138 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Multi-objective optimization-tool for the universal application in chemical process designA universally applicable procedure for multi-objective optimization of chemical processes is developed. A set of known methods and procedures is adapted, combined with newly developed concepts, and integrated into the developed optimization tool, namely, the Adv:ProcessOptimizer. It allows for efficient, comfortable, and robust optimization of a process which is modeled in one of the various linked commercial simulation tools. As a result, the application of the process design with an overlaid optimization is easily accessible for academia and process industry. The industrial styrene process was optimized in order to validate the method. The results show a very densely and mostly equally crowded Pareto front and considerable savings in investment as well as operating costs compared to two reference designs.Publicationtype: Journal Article97 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Development of a diversity-preserving strategy for the pareto optimization in chemical process designThe simulation-based design of chemical processes with an overlaid multi-objective optimization is of growing importance. The quality of the determined optimization results, referred to as the Pareto front, influences directly the variety of solutions given to the decision maker. In case of the frequently used genetic algorithms, a lot of studies have been done for a precise approximation of the Pareto front. However, most of the developed methods are inconvenient and/or time-consuming and, thus, inappropriate for industrial applications. A novel approach, the two-step optimization, was successfully tested in order to overcome these challenges.Publicationtype: Journal Article112 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Optimisation of process parameters with simultaneous consideration of energy efficiency measuresSustainable process design and energy efficiency evaluation are major topics for recent process engineering. Process integration by the means of heat recovery is a powerful approach to reduce the need for additional heating or cooling. Usually a heat exchanger network is applied to utilize waste heat within a process directly, while a super ordinated utility system is applied for indirect heat transfer between different processes. The aim of this work is to point out the possibilities of multi-objective optimisation in order to implement the design of heat recovery measures at an early stage of process design. Similar to the well-known pinch technology this new combined optimisation procedure can be best described as an advanced targeting step. Pareto-optimal solutions are generated using a genetic algorithm. The mathematical background will be described within this work.Publicationtype: Conference Paper55
