    Experimental Investigation of the Vibration Behaviour of Variant GFRP Sandwich Panels in Thermal Environment
    (Elsevier, 2025-04-01) ; ;
    In this study, the impact of temperature on the eigenfrequencies and amplifications of four variant GFRP sandwich panels with aramid honeycomb cores is investigated. Tests are carried out at temperatures from −40 °C to 120 °C, which are typical test conditions in the aerospace industry. The tests revealed that the eigenfrequencies of these panels are highly sensitive to temperature changes, with significant changes in vibration behaviour especially noted at temperatures below 0 °C. Furthermore, the study shows that not all resonances develop most at room temperature. The specific dynamic properties and resulting resonances of the individual plates only develop under conditions of changing temperature. This finding is crucial for certification in aerospace and optimising structural design, ensuring robust performance across different operating conditions while leveraging the lightweight potential of the materials. The results highlight the complex interaction between temperature and dynamic behaviour in aerospace materials, providing essential data and insights for designing, analysing, and optimising lightweight aerospace structures. The aim of this publication is to provide initial investigations into the mechanisms behind the temperature-dependent dynamic responses in order to improve the prediction of larger structural components. This can be used in future developments to improve the safety, reliability and efficiency of aerospace systems.

    Die Vielfalt an Produkten und Produktentwicklungsprozessen stellt Ingenieure fortwährend vor Herausforderungen. Besonders bei der Beherrschung von Komplexität infolge hoher Variantenvielfalt sowie der Strukturanalyse im Rahmen der Produktentwicklung bestehen zahlreiche offene Fragstellungen, aus denen ein Forschungsbedarf resultiert. Das Institut für Produktentwicklung und Konstruktionstechnik (PKT) der Technischen Universität Hamburg (TUHH) unter der Leitung von Professor Dr.-Ing. Dieter Krause stellt sich diesen Herausforderungen, um einen Beitrag zum wissenschaftlichen Fortschritt auf dem Gebiet der Produktentwicklung zu leisten. Im vorliegenden Sammelwerk werden Forschungserkenntnisse des PKT aus den Jahren 2021 bis 2025 vorgestellt. Ziel ist es, einen Überblick über die unterschiedlichen Forschungsbereiche und Anwendungsfelder des PKT zu geben. Durch gezielte Einblicke in vielfältige Forschungsthemen sollen Erfahrungen auf den jeweiligen Gebieten aufgezeigt und ein Überblick über die Aktivitäten der letzten 5 Jahre gegeben werden. Im ersten Kapitel wird ein Kurzüberblick über die Struktur des PKT, dessen Forschungsprojekte, sowie die Ausstattung gegeben. Darauf folgt im zweiten Kapitel ein Rückblick auf ausgewählte Ereignisse der Jahre 2021 bis 2025 aus den Bereichen Wissenschaftsdiskurs, Lehre und dem Wissenstransfer in die Industrie. Vibration reduction of lightweight structures through adjustable damping and stiffness properties at their interfaces
    (Multi-Science Publ. Co., 2025) ; ; ;
    This paper presents the vibration reduction of lightweight components by adjusting the mechanical properties of their boundary conditions in vibration test rigs. The variable boundary conditions are achieved by adjustable impedance elements, which are mechanical elements that can change their stiffness and damping behavior separately and are designed for use in vibration testing. A new generation of an adjustable impedance element is presented in this publication and its use in a large component test environment. The influence of the adjustable mechanical properties of the interfaces on an aircraft partition is shown. A holistic finite element model is presented to predict the interactions between the adjustable interfaces and the test object. A vibration reduction of about 65% compared to current rigidly designed joints is achieved. The influence of vibration on the partition is investigated experimentally for different stiffness and damping ranges and the corresponding simulation model is validated.

    Holistic approach to vibration characterization of large structural components in thermal environment
    (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Department of Mechanical Engineering, LMSD, 2024-09) ;
    The dynamic behavior of structural components is significantly influenced by the environmental temperature. The vibration behaviour changes with varying temperature due to changes in stiffness and damping, as well as influences in the boundary conditions and geometry. This effect is particularly noticeable in FRP structures. To accurately determine the effects of temperature on the dynamic behavior of structures, detailed material testing and simulation-based analyses are required, with temperature-dependent material parameters posing a major challenge. In this paper, a holistic approach to vibration characterization of large components is developed. With the help of experimental resonance tests on a simplified structural level and the transfer of the measurement results by inverse parameter identification, an approach is provided to estimate the vibration behavior of large structural components. A part of the primary structure of an aircraft is used as a case study for the procedure and the resonance tests on an electrodynamic shaker.

    Cost pressures and the growing need for sustainability in the aviation industry are placing particular demands on the aircraft cabin and its design. This paper therefore presents new approaches to meet these aspects and to develop innovative and sustainable designs for the aircraft cabin. Furthermore, the potential is shown, which can be realized by the simultaneous consideration of different areas and the implementation of a hybrid design.

    Combined environments - challenges and potentials in the realistic component testing
    Structural components can be exposed to extreme environmental conditions during operation over their service life. For this reason, they have to pass corresponding tests during development and certification in which they are tested for these loads. However, those tests are carried out separately, while in practice the loads occur in combination. This paper discusses the challenges arising from this, using the example of sandwich structures under combined mechanical and thermal loads and cylinder shells under combined mechanical loads. For this purpose, existing investigations, procedures and approaches are analysed, the necessity for combined testing is shown and a possible approach for a structured and reproducible procedure for testing components under combined loads is described.

    A numerical model for vibration analyses of an aircraft partition with parameterized interface properties
    (Composite Construction Laboratory, 2022-06) ; ;
    Aircraft structures are subjected to environmental conditions that can cause critical damage. The vibrational behavior of cabin structures can be influenced by adjusting the mechanical properties at the connections. Many possible mechanical properties lead to a large number of necessary investigations. Therefore, a dynamic model of a partition with parameterized interface properties in frequency domain is presented. Physical tests are performed on a vibration test rig to determine the internal damping of the structure. The vibration amplification depending on different interface properties is determined by amplification functions over several resonance frequencies. The resulting behavior is analyzed and its vibration reduction over all interface properties is determined. With the model presented, the possibility of reducing vibrations through adjustable impedance elements can be predicted. Requirements for physical examinations and properties for vibration-optimized connections in aircrafts can be derived from this.
