Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , A taxonomy of mindsets : current conceptualizations and future directions for mindset-based research in innovation and entrepreneurship(Springer, 2024-04-02); ; ; Understanding the contextual embeddedness of individuals’ mindsets is imperative for our understanding of innovation and entrepreneurship. Diverging mindset conceptualizations have, however, resulted in the fuzziness of mindset research. With this taxonomy, we provide not only a theoretical analysis of differences and similarities across mindset conceptualizations but also six conceptual dimensions for a taxonomy of mindsets, namely, (1) relevant root constructs to operationalize mindsets, (2) the nature of mindsets, (3) behavioral implications, (4) contextual embeddedness, (5) level of analysis, and (6) causal relation of mindsets to other phenomena of interests. Our dimensions represent a continuum of underlying conceptual assumptions and a framework for scholars to explore innovative and entrepreneurial behavior based on mindsets. Furthermore, we propose a theory-driven definition for the innovation mindset resembling the entrepreneurial mindset, and we offer future research avenues to better understand the potential of mindset-based research for inclusive innovation and entrepreneurship.Publicationtype: Book part20 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Innovation Mindsets – A Framework to Understand Employees' Motivation to Act on Opportunities for InnovationOpportunities for innovation are ubiquitous, and organisations are constantly challenged to adjust their innovation practices. In this context, innovation opportunities can be defined as possibilities to realise economic or social value through a new combination of technologies and human needs, emerging from changes in the technological knowledge base or customer preferences. However, it is important to keep in mind that organisations as such do not identify opportunities. Rather, their members; hence, employees do. Yet, why do certain employees perceive situations as opportunities rather than threats, which determines their innovative behaviour? In other words, what determines employees’ innovation-related mindsets? Previous research suggests that innovation can be understood as an outcome, a process or a mindset. This study builds on the before-mentioned typology of innovation and draws on theories from social psychology to provide a more nuanced understanding of the mindset-based perspective on innovation. In this chapter, we present our model for the specific context of frugal innovation and derive a framework to understand innovative behaviour in other contexts, such as employee-driven innovation. Hence, our approach provides a promising framework for practitioners to empower managers and employees to engage in innovative behaviour.Publicationtype: Book part16 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , The crucial role of mindsets in innovation efforts: opening the black box in the context of frugal innovationInnovation research has investigated the relevance of innovations for organizational competitiveness and the role of innovations for social as well as economic welfare. Accordingly, scholars and practitioners frequently emphasize the innovation processes that lead to desired innovative outcomes. Nevertheless, these innovation processes have to be carried out by motivated individuals. Increasingly, academic literature takes the mindsets of these actors into consideration. However, diverging conceptualizations limit our understanding of the term "mindset" and the role of individuals’ mindsets in organizational innovation efforts. This book aims at opening the “black box” of innovation as a mindset. Linking mindset theories from social psychology to the context of frugal innovation, the author provides rigorous conceptual work on mindsets in innovation. This conceptual research is supported by findings from two empirical studies. This book makes important contributions to theory and practice: to academic research by developing conceptual clarity on understanding innovation as a mindset and providing supportive empirical evidence, and to innovation practice by showing how a detailed understanding of individuals’ mindsets can inform evidence-based change interventions. About the author: Malte Krohn dedicates his professional career to democratizing innovation and entrepreneurship. Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , The deliberative frugal mindset : a model of managerial opportunity recognition for frugal innovation(2020-01-28); ; ; The importance of growing economic powerhouses like India and China is increasing. Consequently, cost effective products and services and therefore, Frugal Innovations provide attractive business opportunities for globally operating companies. However, not all organizations seem to recognize these opportunities for what they are. The question arises if key decision makers have the right mindset to initiate and support respective innovation projects within their organizations. We take on our previous research on the Frugal Mindset and present the results of two recent studies to further develop our theory. In our first study we generate items based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour by conducting a systematic literature review of 95 publications and validate as well refine this approach in a focus group discussion with 16 experts on Frugal Innovation. Consequently, we test our research instrument for practicability, comprehensibility and further refine the items in a small scale pilot study including 8 follow-up interviews with managers from 2 multi-national companies. Based on this procedure we present a research model, a measurement instrument and first qualitative insights on the Deliberative Fugal Mindset.Publicationtype: Working Paper416 381 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Developing and implementing frugal innovation mindsets in organisationsFrugal innovation requires significant changes in the innovation approach of organizations. Without managers that see the necessity to integrate cost conscious B2C or B2B consumers into the innovation strategy and front-line employees that engage in intense market immersion and development of frugal solutions, frugal innovation projects might encounter serious barriers. The cultivation of a frugal mindset is vital to ensure employee commitment along the whole innovation process. Hence, frugal innovation does not only rely on developing the right skillset but also the right mindset. We present first results of an ongoing action research project to exemplify how activities along the innovation process can be used to develop and spread this mindset. By consciously using well known approaches like ethnography style market research and multidisciplinary team work, an understanding of the need for frugal innovation is developed and spread amongst relevant stakeholders. Nevertheless, even if everyone engaged in the “doing” of frugal innovation is convinced and committed, clearly communicated legitimation and support from senior management is still critical to do things fundamentally differently.Publicationtype: Book Part115 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Understanding managers perspectives in the face of global socio-economic shifts – towards an instrument to measure the recognition of opportunities for frugal innovation(2019-06); ; Addressing the growing global middle class and emerging markets with fitting products offer large business opportunities for companies worldwide. Frugal innovation is an innovation concept that has resulted in successful cases of products for these markets that are characterized by a substantial cost reduction, concentration on core functionalities and an optimized performance level. Previous research suggests that a frugal mindset is needed in the organization and its members to enable the successful development of frugal innovations in firms. Operationalizing the frugal mindset for organizations is, therefore, an important step in enabling companies to innovate frugally. A systematic literature review and focus group discussion were performed to identify key influencing factors on the decision-making of individuals towards frugal innovation projects in organizations. The literature review identified influencing factors, which were then discussed and extended with 16 experts, practitioners and stakeholders from the field of frugal innovations in a focus group. This study identified 32 key influencing factors that are relevant for the initiation and performance of frugal innovation projects in organizations. The results of this study offer implications for academic research on frugal innovations and the frugal mindset as well as managerial implications for organizations looking to engage in frugal innovations.Publicationtype: Conference Paper157 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , The question of a frugal mindset in western MNCs - exploring an emerging phenomenon with a systematic literature review(2018-03); Frugal innovation in the context of developed ecomomies has witnessed increasing interest in recent years. For Western multinational companies (MNCs) emerging markets represent promising opportunities for growth as well as the threat of new local competitors. Furthermore, economic developments drive the demand for frugal products within Western countries. Succesfully mastering this challenge means that Western MNCs have to challenge prevailing paradigms within their organizations. Literature suggests that these companies have to develop a frugal mindset to succeed in frugal innovation. However, to the best of our knowledge no publication addresses the phenomenon on an empirical basis or provides enough detail for further empirical investigation. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic literature review of 80 publications in the frugal innovation field. Building on the theroetical background of the global mindset concept, we assume that a mindset is a cognitive orientation that promotes task completion, which in turn improves task performance. Our qualitative analysis suggests that in the context of frugal innovation improved task performance would positively contribute to the following goals: (1) strategic alignment of innovating for cost conscious consumers, especially in emerging markets (2) deepening the understanding of cognitively remote customers’ needs and the context in which they live or work and (3) satisfaction of these customers’ needs with frugal solutions. Furthermore, we propose that a frugal mindset can be cultivated along the phases of (1) accepting the new realities of changing markets and competition, (2) a willingness to reconsider current approaches and (3) a willingness to take the necessary action and implement new approaches regarding the identified goals. By developing a definition based on this two-dimensional construct, we build on the theoretical foundations of a well-established mindset concept from the field of organizational behavior/strategic management and integrate various descriptions of the frugal mindset. This contribution provides a solid theoretical basis for further research.Publicationtype: Working Paper699 668
