    Buckling tests of cylindrical composite shells in multiaxial loading
    (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), 2025-09-21) ; ; ; ;
    Thin-walled cylindrical composite shells are prone to buckling failure in a variety of load cases. The number of influencing factors and comparably small amount of test data on combined load cases, which regularly occur in application, pose a major design challenge. Two experimental campaigns on the buckling of thin-walled cylindrical composite shells in multiaxial loading are carried out with two nominally identical specimens with a radius-to-thickness ratio of 375. The results of buckling tests with combined axial compression and torsion, compression and bending, as well as all three buckling critical load types are presented. The influence of the loading direction of bending and torsion is shown, and the effects of repeated mounting of the specimens in the test rig as well as the scatter of buckling loads are discussed. Comparison of test results with the established NASA SP-8007 guideline and perfect buckling loads shows major qualitative and quantitative differences in the load interaction curves.

    Probabilistic analysis of cylindrical shells under continuously varying load combinations
    (Elsevier, 2025-05-22) ;
    This paper presents a probabilistic design method for cylindrical shells under combined loading without explicitly simulating each load combination. Exemplarily, the combination of axial compression and torsion is considered. The probabilistically motivated design load is a quantile of the buckling load distribution. The stochastic distribution of the buckling load (and hence any quantile) differs for each combination of axial load and torsion. The basic idea of the presented method is to consider the buckling response as a random field, where the parameter describing the load ratio is the field variable. When this random field is characterized, the stochastic distribution may be determined for any load combination without explicitly running a probabilistic analysis for this load combination. This approach is compared to a more simple and straightforward approach of interpolating stochastic moments or quantiles between different load combinations.

    Experimental investigation and probabilistic analysis of the buckling load of isotropic cylinders under multiaxial loading
    This paper presents a multitude of experimental results for cylindrical shells under combined loading. The loading is a combination of axial compression and bending moment. These are accompanied with numerical simulations. The load ratio itself is subject to scatter, a direct comparison and application of results for the sizing of shells is not straight forward. Therefore, a new approach is presented, which transfers the results to normalized load factors.

    Streuung der Traglast von Kreiszylinderschalen unter kombinierter Belastung
    (Institut für Baustatik, Technische Universität Hamburg, 2024-03) ; ; ; ;
    Der vorliegende Beitrag zeigt die Ergebnisse einer experimentellen Studie, in der für 22 Kreiszylinderschalen die Traglast unter kombinierter Axialdruck- und Biegebelastung ermittelt wurde. Während die Beullast unter reinem Axialdruck bekanntermaßen stark streut, kann sich diese Streuung mit zunehmender Biegebeanspruchung verändern. Für den Vergleich werden die Ergebnisse aus Last und Moment zu einem normierten Lastfaktor zusammengefasst und als Zufallsfeld betrachtet.
