Publicationtype: Book Part14 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Retrofit as a module driver: enabling circular and service-oriented vehicle architecturesThe climate emergency has prompted the European Green Deal, triggering far-reaching circular-economy legislation for road vehicles. Emerging directives – most notably the draft End-of-Life Vehicle Regulation – tighten material-recovery quotas and favor business models in which manufacturers retain ownership of their fleets. As a result, the Mobility as a Service (MaaS) business model is becoming increasingly important for the automotive industry, significantly impacting vehicle design and modularization strategies. Unlike the conventional paradigm, which prioritizes personalization and initial purchase decisions, MaaS vehicles experience intensified usage patterns, leading to accelerated aesthetic and haptic degradation of user-facing components. Consequently, product architectures must increasingly take into account simplified maintenance and refurbishment strategies to maintain high perceived quality over prolonged operational lifespans. Current modularization methods, however, do not explicitly address these requirements. To bridge this gap, this paper introduces Retrofit as a dedicated module driver, extending the established catalogue guiding early-stage modular product structuring. Retrofit refers to the systematic capability of exchanging or renewing modules within a vehicle, particularly focusing on swift renewal of interior surfaces and components that rapidly deteriorate under high utilization, thereby safeguarding perceived quality and residual value. To illustrate this concept, the paper presents a case study of an automotive seat module. Seats represent a critical interface for user comfort and vehicle perception, making them ideal for demonstrating retrofit-driven modularization. Using this example, the study shows how Retrofit facilitates rapid, cost-effective replacements and refurbishments of wear-prone interior modules, contributing to improved fleet operability and sustainability. The findings underline Retrofit’s strategic role in future automotive product architectures, emphasizing the need for automotive manufacturers to adapt modularization strategies accordingly. Integrating Retrofit as a module driver aligns automotive products with the evolving economic, environmental, and operational objectives of MaaS business models.Publicationtype: Conference Paper14 16 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Ansatz zur Berücksichtigung von Obsoleszenz im Rahmen der Entwicklung modularer ProduktfamilienThis article presents an approach to considering obsolescence in the context of developing modular product families. Against the backdrop of increasing sustainability requirements and increasing resource depletion, the circular economy is gaining attention. In this context, it is becoming increasingly important to consider the reasons why a product reaches the end of its useful life. By specifically addressing obsolescence, the service life of both the initial product and the individual components can be extended and suitable circular strategies can be selected. This is achieved through a multi-stage process for identifying relevant obsolescence scenarios, thereby enabling the obsolescence risk of the components to be assessed.Publicationtype: Conference Paper34 12 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

By integrating Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC), and Social Life Cycle Assessment (SLCA), the new S-PAS method visualizes ecological, economic, and social impacts at process level. A case study on disposable paper cup production demonstrates how S-PAS supports early-stage decision-making in product development through clear, process-specific sustainability visualization.Publicationtype: Conference Paper51 14 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Lifecycle-oriented interface standardization in modular product families: drivers and trade-offs across phasesInterfaces play a central role in modular product families, influencing both modularity and cost efficiency. However, their strategic importance throughout the product lifecycle is often underestimated, as the requirements vary largely between different life phases. This paper introduces a systematic approach to identifying, classifying and evaluating interfaces, based on criteria such as functionality, variety, communication effort, lifecycle connection and costs. This approach allows for a relevance ranking and supports targeted standardization or integration strategies. Applying this approach to a robot vacuum product family reveals critical interfaces and related trade-offs, helping to improve product family architectures at an early stage.Publicationtype: Conference Paper64 29 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Challenges in addressing sustainability within product developmentDue to climate change, sustainability has become a crucial topic in product development, while addressing it is associated with many challenges. Based on a literature review, those challenges are collected and clustered into nine categories and sub-categories defined for this purpose. Additionally, a research project is analysed. The exhibited challenges such as data availability versus influenceability, a lack of unified sustainability criteria, and decision-making trade-offs underscore the need for refined methodologies and collaboration in sustainability-oriented design. The differently sourced challenges are compared and the new challenges arising from the research project are sorted into the categories. Finally, possible reasons are discussed for why within the project only challenges from four out of nine categories are encountered.Publicationtype: Journal Article34 23 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Procedure for the multi-objective design and sustainability optimization of composite sandwich structures in aircraft cabin applications(Elsevier, 2025); ; ; ; In engineering, optimizing products across multiple performance metrics - such as cost, weight, and environmental sustainability - presents a significant challenge. Composite sandwich structures, in particular, offer a vast design space with diverse materials and geometric parameters, leading to conflicting design objectives. This study presents a procedure integrating Genetic Algorithms (GA), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and rule-based performance metric calculations to address these challenges. GA facilitate efficient exploration of the design space, while via FEA mechanical performance is evaluated, and via rule-based calculations economic and ecological metrics are assessed. The procedure is applied to an aircraft partition-like sandwich structure, demonstrating its effectiveness in balancing trade-offs and achieving holistic design optimization. This approach provides valuable tools and insights for engineers and designers working with advanced composite materials, highlighting its potential to support sustainable development and informed decision-making in product design.Publicationtype: Conference Paper25 13 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
