Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Design of quantized decoders for polar codes using the information bottleneck methodPolar codes are a relatively new introduction to the family of forward error correcting codes. This work deals with reducing the implementation complexity of polar decoders. To that end, a discrete successive cancellation list decoder is developed which mostly processes only unsigned integers instead of LLR values. Further, all operations inside the discrete decoder are simple table lookups. These two modifications lead to reduction in the complexity of the decoder. We show that the block error rate performance of the proposed discrete decoder is very close to that of the conventional successive cancellation list decoder.Publicationtype: Conference Paper62 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Improving ultra wideband in-body communication using space diversityFor certain medical applications, e.g. capsule endoscopy, high resolution images need to be transmitted from the inside of the human body to an on-body receiver. Ultra wideband communication is widely considered a feasible alternative to increase the data rate compared to today's available products operating with narrowband communication. Based on a channel model developed specifically for in-body communication in the ultra wideband frequency range, we simulate the bit error rate of a communication link utilizing ultra wideband pulse position modulation. First of all, the effect on the bit error rate depending on the position of one antenna is investigated. Furthermore, up to 5 receive antennas are placed on the skin and space diversity is exploited using different combining schemes, which are systematically compared. Results show that the placement of the receive antennas is much more important for a successful data transmission, than the choice of the combining scheme. Due to the high attenuation inside the body maximum ratio combining performs similar to selection combining.Publicationtype: Conference Paper53 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , A Parametric Information Bottleneck Algorithm for Gaussian Random Variables and Gaussian MixturesRecently, the information bottleneck method, a machine learning framework, was incorporated in several communication engineering related applications. However, most of these applications are limited to discrete relevant random variables. This is mostly due to the lack of appropriate deterministic information bottleneck algorithms suitable for continuous random variables. In this paper, we present a novel deterministic information bottleneck algorithm, which we call the parametric information bottleneck algorithm, suitable for continuous relevant variables with a Gaussian distribution. We show that our proposed algorithm operates close to the theoretically achievable Gaussian information bottleneck bound. In addition, our proposed algorithm allows to efficiently compress any continuous random variable whose distribution can be approximated by a Gaussian mixture distribution. Exemplarily, using the proposed parametric information bottleneck algorithm, we devise a relevant-information- preserving temperature sensor. Although the resolution of the sensor’s analog-to-digital converter is only 5 bit, the proposed information bottleneck algorithm finds quantization regions such that 99.9% relevant information is preserved.Publicationtype: Conference Paper148
