    Fixed-structure discrete-time ℋ<inf>∞</inf> controller synthesis with HIFOO
    This paper presents an extension of the HIFOO toolbox for Matlab for fixed-structure and fixed-order ℋ∞ controller design to discrete-time controller design. The approach is applied to a restricted complexity controller synthesis problem for an active suspension system. ©2010 IEEE.

    Controller synthesis for input-output LPV models
    This paper considers the synthesis of linear parameter-varying (LPV) controllers for plant models given in input-output LPV form. For SISO systems, a method for synthesizing LPV gain-scheduled controllers in input-output form has been proposed recently, where the a priori choice of a central polynomial plays a critical role, and the synthesis problem is solved using a sum-of-squares relaxation. In this paper we propose a way of simplifying this design procedure, by replacing the sum-of-squares approach by representing the closed-loop model in polytopic input-output LPV form and then using a gradient-based optimization to solve the synthesis BMI. In this procedure the central polynomial is tuned while the closed-loop performance index is minimized over the decision variables, which include the controller parameters. The proposed method is illustrated with simulation examples.

    Linear recurrent neural network for open- and closed-loop consistent identification of LPV models
    In this paper a Linear Recurrent Neural Network (LRNN) approach is used to consistently identify input-output Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) systems with additive output noise in input-output representation. Moreover, an indirect identification approach based on structured LRNN is proposed for consistent identification of input-output LPV models in closed-loop. The structured LRNN is trained to identify the closed-loop system from the reference to the output signal, where the controller parameters are presented as fixed weights and the parameters of the LPV model as unknown weights. The open-loop model can then be easily extracted from the identified closed-loop model. The proposed approach is illustrated with simulation examples, and a comparison with an existing approach is given.

    Local controller synthesis for multi-agent systems subject to time-varying communication delays
    (IEEE, 2010) ;
    In this paper we investigate the robust controller design problem for a Multi-Agent System (MAS). The agents are modeled as identical LTI systems and the way in which they exchange information is modeled by a directed graph. The communication structure may be subject to changes and is affected by time-varying delays. Moreover, the communication delays may also affect an agent's own outputs. We extend an approach of synthesizing a controller that stabilizes arbitrarily switching communication topologies by robustifying the controller with respect to unknown and time-varying but bounded communication delays. To improve the performance of the controller, we introduce a prediction scheme using non-causal uncertainty blocks. The results are illustrated by a comparison of a simulated formation flight of quad-rotor helicopters.

    Identification of spatially interconnected systems using neural network
    This paper presents an identification technique based on linear recurrent neural network to identify spatially interconnected systems both in open and closed-loop form. The latter has not been addressed in the literature for the systems under consideration. The paper considers identification of two-dimensional (time and space) systems; the method can be easily extended to have more than one dimension in space. In this paper we consider a semi-causal (causal in time and non-causal in space) two-dimensional (2-D) system, which may be separable or non-separable but the method can also be used for 2-D systems which are causal in both dimensions. Furthermore the algorithm can handle boundary conditions. The effectiveness of the method is shown with application to simulation examples.

    Control of a two-load-path trimmable horizontal stabilizer actuator of an aircraft — comparison of ℋ<inf>∞</inf> design approaches
    A novel Trimmable Horizontal Stabilizer Actuator (THSA) design of an aircraft, developed by the Institute of Aircraft Systems Engineering at Hamburg University of Technology, distinguishes itself from conventional THSA systems by its two-load-path structure that allows for higher reliability and easier maintenance. This article presents a case study of an application of four optimal ℋ ∞ controller synthesis methods (mixed sensitivity, four-block design, loop shaping and mixed-sensitivity II) to the THSA control problem. The designed controllers are then experimentally tested on the THSA test rig and the design techniques are compared with respect to the performance of their controllers and the ease of their implementation.
