Critical Components for Distributed and Secure Grid Operation

Efficient integration of high shares of renewable energies in technically and economically integrated energy systems
Renewable energies are the key to a sustainable and climate-friendly energy supply. However, the volatility and supply dependency of generation requires new technical and economic concepts for far-reaching integration. Sector coupling is becoming increasingly important in this context, as interconnected energy sectors open up a large field of possible energy supply paths, within which the efficiency of the overall system is increased by utilizing the inherent storage capacity of the individual sectors. The EffiziEntEE project is about developing a modern market design that optimally exploits the flexibility of the integrated energy system. Project partners are various institutes of the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and the Technische Universität Dresden. The object is to develop a multi-layer optimization for operation. In the higher layer, the schedule for the following day is first calculated using a market model, which includes a simplified steady-state network model for the electrical transmission network. This already includes congestion management measures based on load flow calculations taking into account actor behavior, power-to-X technologies and the flexibility of representative distribution grid models. In the second layer of the model, dynamic simulations are used to consider stability and resilience, which represent restrictions for the market in the first layer. After market clearing, schedules and uncertainties are evaluated according to resilience and sustainability criteria using simulative studies. Within the market constraints, further optimization can thus be performed to further improve the target values for plants. The overall goal is a toolchain developed jointly with all project partners, which is freely available afterwards. In the EffiziEntEE project, the TUHH primarily deals with the second layer for modeling and simulation of sector-coupled, or multi-modal energy networks. The central tool is the open description and modeling language Modelica with the TransiEnt Library developed in it. In this context, many research fields arise. In case of interest - for example for project work and theses - the mentioned staff members are available.

Optimized Load Management and Flexibility Coordination for Electrified Urban Public Transport
Transport companies in Germany are progressively converting their fleets to zero-emission drives as part of the decarbonization process. E-buses are currently charged mostly via a charging management system that distributes the available power to the various buses on the basis of internal, operational criteria (state of charge, disposition, time of use, etc.). The current states of the power grid and power acquisition have not been taken into account so far, although it is known that the expansion of the charging infrastructure can lead to local overload situations in the distribution grid. Therefore, the KoLa project investigates the flexibility potentials of E-bus charging at the depot of Hamburger Hochbahn AG in Alsterdorf. New functions for the existing load management are to be developed so that the charging of the E-buses can also be optimized and shifted in time in the future on the basis of external control variables (criteria on the electricity grid side such as grid utilization and criteria on the electricity market side such as electricity market prices). By utilizing this flexibility potential, the electricity supply can be optimized on the basis of ecological (e.g., only green electricity) or economic (e.g., inexpensive electricity) criteria. In order to ensure grid stability and minimize grid expansion despite flexible power usage, a coordination function (KOF) is being developed at the distribution grid level as part of the project. This IT platform ensures that the shifting of the charging processes happens in accordance with the current grid-side requirements. The main focus of our contribution is the development of a method for the evaluation and selection of flexibility offers within the KOF and the development of a grid congestion forecast for the KOF. In addition, a distributed simulation and laboratory environment will be built to test the overall function before it is deployed in the field.

Networked grid protection systems - Adaptive and interconnected
The integration of decentralized generation plants creates new feed-in points in the distribution grid level, which can cause unusually enormous intermediate feeds and feed-backs into the higher-level grid level. As a result, network topology changes are already necessary several times a day. If, in the course of these topology changes, conditions that cannot be controlled by the existing protection concept are detected, DEA must be shut down immediately. An alternative to curtailment through flexible event-based (adaptive) adjustment of protection parameters is not currently envisaged and is not currently feasible in terms of data generation, transmission and processing in the field. The goal of the VeN²uS research project is therefore to research and implement an adaptive and networked grid protection system that adapts the protection parameters in the event of power flow shifts and topology changes and ensures safe operation. To this end, a simulative verification facility for an adaptive grid protection algorithm is first being developed under the leadership of IEET. In parallel, resilient and reliable communication and protection verification concepts for the adaptive and networked grid protection system will be researched. Subsequently, the development paths will be merged and the adaptive and networked grid protection system will be validated by demonstration in the laboratory and (for the first time in Germany) also in field trials. This ensures that real challenges of commissioning and grid management are addressed.

Disruptive functions and technology for angle-based integrated grid operation in converter-dominated power systems with predominantly renewable energy supply
Due to the increasingly regenerative power generation and the reduction of conventional power plants, a significant number of synchronous generators will be removed from the power grid. Since the basic operation principles of frequency-based energy grids are directly determined by the behavior of the synchronous generators, it is necessary to adapt and further develop the grid to the new conditions. By imprinting a voltage, synchronous generators electrotechnically realize a grid-forming behavior. In the future, this functionality must be provided by converters, which have faster dynamic behavior and more various control options than synchronous generators. A possibility to assign an operating point to a grid-supporting voltage source converter based on the network state is an angle-based integrated grid operation, the so-called angle control. This is expected to have several advantages compared to the state-of-the-art frequency control approach. Unlike frequency deviations, angle errors in power imbalances occur only locally. This allows power balancing where the imbalance occurred and prevents accruing compensation power from being transported over long distances. Thus, the overall system load can be reduced and possible grid congestion problems can be avoided. In the project DisrupSys, angle-based integrated grid operation in converter-dominated power supply systems is being researched and developed while maintaining the active and reactive power balance. The focus is on the transformation of the integrated grid. Converters, storage and grid control technology are being investigated. These are to be used by a new grid control method in such a way that an overall better and more effective utilization of the technical possibilities and functions of an electrical grid equipped with these technologies can be achieved. A demonstration of the developed prototypical system based on simulations and real-time simulations is planned.

Integrated network planning for the electricity, gas and heat sectors
In this sub-project "iNeP - Integrated Network Planning" of the joint project "NRL - North German Real Laboratory", a planning methodology, a planning model and a corresponding planning tool are being developed, which consider the networks of the three energy carriers electricity, gas and heat of the industrial metropolis of Hamburg in an integrated manner with regard to favorable interconnection points and technologies as well as expansion recommendations for the network structures and storage facilities. For this purpose, real final energy demands and forecasts as well as data on already existing network infrastructures will first be collected. A methodology will be developed to compare different grid expansion alternatives. The basis for operational planning is a newly developed aggregated model for integrated network planning, taking into account the physical constraints of the various energy sources. As a result of the methodology and model application, recommendations for coordinated grid expansion will be derived. For this purpose, a computer-aided procedure including the testing of artificial intelligence methods will be developed.
