Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Influence of delamination characteristics in carbon fibre/epoxy laminates on signal features of pulse thermography(Springer, 2014-12-10); ; ; ; Carbon fibre reinforced polymer specimens were used in double cantilever beam tests in order to investigate the influence of delamination characteristics on multiple signal features extracted from active thermography data. During mechanical loading, delamination opening and growth were induced, allowing controlled setting of different configurations. In addition to the standardised specimens, specimen geometries were altered to investigate delamination depth and influences from two overlapping delaminations in different depths. The thermography data was obtained from a measurement where the specimens were subjected to a rectangular long pulse emitted from a halogen light. From the data various signal features were extracted. Correlations between signal features such as phase angle difference and delamination opening were investigated. Furthermore, a comparison of the relation between extracted features allowed identifying different sections of the delamination, proving the methods applicability as a detailed classification tool. Due to the high number of features extracted robustness is increased.Publicationtype: Journal Article60 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Fracture toughness and failure mechanism of graphene based epoxy composites(Elsevier, 2014-04-01); ; ; ; The present study investigates the effect of addition of three different types on carbon nano-fillers on fracture toughness (KIC) and failure mechanism of epoxy based polymer nano-composites. The carbon nano-fillers were dispersed in the epoxy matrix using a three-roll mill and the three nano-fillers used for this experiment were (i) thermally reduced graphene oxide (TRGO); (ii) graphite nano-platelets (GNP); and (iii) multi-wall carbon nano-tubes (MWCNT). The fracture toughness was measured as a function of weight percentage of the filler using single edge notch three-point-bending tests. The toughening effect of TRGO was most significant resulting in 40% increase in KIC for 0.5wt% of filler. On the other hand, the enhancements in toughness were 25% for GNP/epoxy and 8% for MWCNT/epoxy. Investigations on fracture surface revealed that crack pinning or bi-furcation by TRGO and crack face separation initiated from TRGO contributed to enhance the fracture toughness. Based on the observations, a schematic explaining the crack propagation in graphene/epoxy composite and the interaction of crack front with graphene particles was proposed.Publicationtype: Journal Article35 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
