Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Curricular network analysis(2019-09); ; Academics usually have a good overview of their discipline which allows them to rapidly integrate new knowledge into a general context. Students often lack this overview and need to develop an own picture of their discipline and the connections between different subjects and courses. For an analysis of the bachelor program in chemical engineering at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), lecturers wanted to know how their students perceive the cross-links between different lectures. Therefore, a method was developed to analyse students' perceptions of the links between lectures, called curricular network analysis. Attending a lecture, students take structured notes on topics, formulas or facts if they either recognise them as parts of other lectures or if the lecturer points out the connections. All notes are added to a database which is subsequently analysed with regard to the connecting topics and the frequency of their occurrence. Graphical illustrations of the results give a vivid impression of connections between single lectures and of the network of contents that characterise the whole study program. The visualisation can rapidly spark a discussion between lecturers because it allows them to compare their own concepts with the perceptions of the students. Since it facilitates identifying redundant repetitions and missing references between courses, it enables a learner-orientated restructuring of the study program. This paper describes the method in detail, presents results of an investigation with a group of students and shows how the obtained data were used for restructuring the bachelor program in (bio-)chemical engineering at TUHH.Publicationtype: Conference Paper153 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Open assignments in a first year student projectMany universities offer projects to support students at the beginning of their studies in order to sustainably enhance the students' motivation or facilitate orientation and network building at university. We introduced a new, open project format during winter semester of 2015/16. In this project, freshmen develop products for specified target groups. After establishing a close cooperation with the local association of the blind and visually impaired, a usercentered approach for product development was used for the assignment where students developed a new product to simplify the daily lives of that target group. Students derived a specific technical problem statement and discussed their understanding of the problem as well as their ideas for solving them with the future users. Results of this project were an inclusive version of the popular board game "The Settlers of Catan", a tactile model of local main train station, and on the metalevel clear ideas for integrating this project format in the curriculum. In this paper, we will show how different aspects of this project format can be developed, which special features need consideration when using largely ill-defined assignments, and what kind of support students need to successfully finish the project.Publicationtype: Conference Paper204 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Modellierung der mittleren Phaseder HIV-Infektion unter Medikation(De Gruyter, 2003); ; ; ; This paper presents an approach to modelling the middle phase of the HIV infection with medication. The model describes the viral load, concentrations of healthy and infected CD4+- T-cells and CD8+-T-cells in blood. Processes of death, birth, and infection are regarded, as well as infection inhibition and control processes for cell concentrations of the immune system. The main difference between HIV and other infections can then be interpreted in terms of the internal coupling structure. The parameters of the model are estimated with the help of clinical data. A method to predict the effect of medication, based on a measurement of initial cell concentrations before therapy begins, is presented. © Oldenbourg Verlag.Publicationtype: Journal Article27
