Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , An evaluation of bucketing in systems with non-deterministic timing behavior(Springer, 2018-08-28); ; ; ;Mantel, HeikoTiming side-channel vulnerabilities constitute a serious threat against privacy and confidentiality of data. In this article, we study the effects of bucketing, a previously proposed mitigation technique against timing side channels. We present two implementations of bucketing that reside at the application and at the kernel level, respectively. We experimentally evaluate the effectiveness of these implementations in a setting with non-deterministic timing behavior, a practically relevant setting that has not been studied before. Our results show that the impact of non-deterministic timing behavior is substantial. The bucket boundaries cannot be established sharply and this reduces the effectiveness of bucketing. Nevertheless, bucketing still provides a significant reduction of side-channel capacity.Publicationtype: Conference Paper10 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Towards accelerated usage control based on access correlationsLow run-time overhead is crucial for the practicability of usage-control mechanisms. In this article, we propose an approach to accelerate usage control by exploiting access correlations. Our approach combines two main ingredients: firstly, a technique to compute decisions ahead of time and, secondly, a method to guide selection of usage events to pre-compute decisions for. For the first, we speculatively pre-compute decisions for usage events. For the second, we exploit access correlations to identify high acceleration potential. We implemented our approach and evaluated it in a case study of security policy enforcement in a distributed storage system. Our empirical results show that the speedup is substantial. More concretely, the speedup on average is up to 61.5%.Publicationtype: Conference Paper10 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Relationship-based access control for resharing in decentralized online social networksDecentralized online social networks (DOSNs) have adopted quite coarse-grained policies for sharing messages with friends of friends (i.e., resharing). They either forbid it completely or allow resharing of messages only without any possibility to constrain their subsequent distribution. In this article, we present a novel enforcement mechanism for securing resharing in DOSNs by relationship-based access control and user-determined privacy policies. Our mechanism supports resharing and offers users control over their messages after resharing. Moreover, it addresses the fact that DOSNs are run by multiple providers and honors users’ choices of which providers they trust. We clarify how our mechanism can be effectively implemented by a prototype for the DOSN Diaspora*. Our experimental evaluation shows that controlling privacy with our prototype causes only a rather small performance overhead.Publicationtype: Conference Paper16 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Cliseau: Securing distributed java programs by cooperative dynamic enforcementCliSeAu is a novel tool for hardening distributed Java programs. CliSeAu takes as input a specification of the desired properties and a Java bytecode target program, i.e. the format in which Java programs are usually provided. CliSeAu returns hardened Java bytecode that provides the same functionality as the original code, unless this code endangers the desired properties. By monitoring the components of a distributed system in a decentralized and coordinated fashion, our tool CliSeAu is able to enforce a wide range of properties, both effectively and efficiently. In this article, we present the architecture of CliSeAu, explain how the components of a distributed target program are instrumented by CliSeAu, and illustrate at an example application how CliSeAu can be used for securing distributed programs.Publicationtype: Conference Paper25 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Service automataWe propose a novel framework for reliably enforcing security in distributed systems. Service automata monitor the execution of a distributed program and enforce countermeasures before a violation of a security policy can occur. A key novelty of our proposal is that security is enforced in a decentralized though coordinated fashion. This provides the basis for reliably enforcing global security requirements without introducing unnecessary latencies or communication overhead. The novel contributions of this article include the concept of service automata and a generic formalization of service automata in CSP. We also illustrate how the generic model can be tailored to given security requirements by instantiating its parameters in a stepwise and modular manner.Publicationtype: Conference Paper10
