    Evaluating Magic Leap 2 controller tracking for sensor tool guidance in AR-based industrial inspections
    Rigorous evaluation of commercial Augmented Reality (AR) hardware is crucial, yet public benchmarks for tool tracking on modern Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) are limited. This paper addresses this gap by systematically assessing the Magic Leap 2 (ML2) controller’s tracking performance. Using a robotic arm for repeatable motion (EN ISO 9283) and an optical tracking system as ground truth, our protocol evaluates static and dynamic performance under various conditions, including realistic paths from a hydrogen leak inspection use case. The results provide a quantitative baseline of the ML2 controller’s accuracy and repeatability and present a robust, transferable evaluation methodology. The findings provide a basis to assess the controller’s suitability for the inspection use case and similar industrial sensor-based AR guidance tasks.

    Industry 5.0 in aircraft production and MRO: challenges and opportunities
    Globally interconnecting machines, processes, and resources driven by exploring and advancing new technologies defined Industry 4.0 (I4.0), resulting in, e.g., Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS). The aircraft industry particularly struggled with transforming production and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) processes, replacing humans with machines and automating as well as digitalizing significant parts of their value- and non-value-adding activities. However, in the face of current social and environmental challenges, future industries will need to shift from purely technology-driven to value-driven, working sustainably with resources, including human capital. Together, these approaches constitute the idea of Industry 5.0 (I5.0). On the one hand, the aviation industry faces the challenge that even I4.0 concepts and technologies are not yet fully exploited or implemented. On the other hand, due to the specific characteristics of aircraft production and MRO as well as the environmental impact of the product, a tremendous potential arises regarding placing human well-being back into the center of adding value and decreasing environmental footprint while building an industry that is resilient and fortified against disruptions of this era. In line with the I5.0 terminology, in this work, we outline the challenges and opportunities of integrating I5.0 principles into the aircraft production and MRO industries, focusing specifically on the scope of selected use cases.

    Augmented reality authoring for efficient inspections in green aviation: evaluating accuracy and usability
    This paper addresses the gap in AR-guided inspection by developing and evaluating an AR authoring tool tailored for green aviation. The tool aims to overcome the current limitations by assisting the inspector in the data acquisition process using hand-held sensors. The study introduces a sensor guidance prototype applicable to various inspection scenarios prone to human error. Usability assessments reveal positive feedback on real-time guidance and an intuitive interface, though challenges in tracking accuracy and managing complex trajectories are identified, particularly with the Microsoft HoloLens 2. Testing on the Magic Leap 2 (ML2) showed sufficient position accuracy of 1.39 mm, suitable for mobile authoring and tracking of trajectories. While results are promising, further optimization in tracking, user interface (UI), and real-world validation is needed.

    HyPLANT100 : industrialization from assembly to the construction site for gigawatt electrolysis
    (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2024-06) ; ; ; ;
    The global push for sustainable energy has heightened the demand for green hydrogen, which is crucial for decarbonizing heavy industry. However, current electrolysis plant capacities are insufficient. This research addresses the challenge through optimizing large-scale electrolysis construction via standardization, modularization, process optimization, and automation. This paper introduces H2Giga, a project for mass-producing electrolyzers, and HyPLANT100, investigating large-scale electrolysis plant structure and construction processes. Modularizing electrolyzers enhances production efficiency and scalability. The integration of AutomationML facilitates seamless information exchange. A digital twin concept enables simulations, optimizations, and error identification before assembly. While construction site automation provides advantages, tasks like connection technologies and handling cables, tubes, and hoses require pre-assembly. This study identifies key tasks suitable for automation and estimating required components. The Enapter Multicore electrolyzer serves as a case study, showcasing robotic technology for tube fittings. In conclusion, this research underscores the significance of standardization, modularization, and automation in boosting the electrolysis production capacity for green hydrogen, contributing to ongoing efforts in decarbonizing the industrial sector and advancing the global energy transition.

    Leakage Inspection for the Scale-Up of Hydrogen Electrolyzers: A Case Study and Comparative Analysis of Technologies
    Since hydrogen is odorless, invisible and highly flammable, regular checks must be carried out to ensure the safe operation of large-scale H2-electrolyzer systems. Leakage tests are conducted during the assembly, the commissioning and the operation of the plant. Since many leakage tests have to be executed, efficient processes are required to reduce production and downtimes to enable a fast scale-up of electrolysis capacities. Therefore, Methods for leakage inspection are compared and technological implementations are discussed. This work contributes to the necessary analysis of requirements to derive research demands and solution concepts for large-scale electrolysis plants.
