Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , A model-based approach for the methodical development and configuration of modular product families(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2023-08-31); ; ; This paper shows how a methodical development and configuration of modular product family concepts and their effects on economic targets can be implemented in SysML. For this purpose, different sources of inconsistency between different methodical tools are highlighted and the need for research is shown. As a solution approach, a methodical framework is presented, which can be used to implement product development methods for the developing of modular product family modeling by means of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) in the modeling language SysML. By applying the framework, it is shown on the one hand how a product family of vacuum cleaner robots as a simple example can be modularized in a methodical, model-based manner. On the other hand, a configuration system and an impact model of modular product families are connected with the system model and applied to a product family of laser systems as an industrial use case. This made it clear that the framework can be used to model various methodical topics of product family modeling in a consistent manner, to enable higher-level analyses with the use of MBSE tools. This can reduce errors, decrease effort and increase traceability across different methodical tools.Publicationtype: Journal Article74 139 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Model-Based Systems Engineering: Discovering Potentials for Methodical Modular Product DevelopmentA constantly growing market variety results in an increasing internal variety, which is reflected in increased variety costs. In order to cope with this situation, different methods for the development of modular product families and their modular product architectures were developed. During the implementation of these methods, different product data come together, which are linked in different tools. At this point, a document-based approach reaches its limits and inconsistencies occur. To counteract, the trend of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is being integrated into methodical modular product development. Using the example of method units of the Integrated PKT Approach for the Development of Modular Product Families, it is shown how the deposit of a meta model of product data enables consistency. The consistent model of the method units Design for Variety and Life Phases Modularization is extended by two elements: Configuration systems and the effects of modular product architectures. A configuration system based on this enables the efficient addressing of customer requirements in sales. The linking of the effects of modular product architectures strengthens the objective of Life Phases Modularization. Furthermore, the resulting consistent overall model generates several analysis options and opens up new possibilities, such as the establishment of Digital Twins.Publicationtype: Book Part96 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Business Models and Product-Service System Design - Introducing the Business Model GraphDue to global megatrends, manufacturing companies are supplementing their existing products with services and are thus transforming themselves into providers of so-called Product-Service Systems. This can open up new business models and new market segments. This paper shows that the identification and subsequent selection of suitable business models is not yet sufficiently supported by existing methods. After pointing out this research gap, the Business Model Graph (BMG) is presented, which shows the solution space of existing business models and enables a systematic analysis of the solution space based on company-specific boundary conditions. Finally, the BMG is applied in a case study.Publicationtype: Conference Paper96 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Using MBSE for the enhancement of consistency and continuity in modular product-service-system architectures(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2021-08-17); ; ; Within emerging markets, ensuring the competitiveness of manufacturing companies is crucial to their success. The integration of new business possibilities, such as Product-Service-Systems (PSS) can provide one suitable solution. Especially within the architecture development process, large amounts of interconnected data and data types need to be processed and versioned. This leads to a significant lack of data consistency and continuity along the development process of modular PSS architectures. This lack of consistency and continuity leads to a process being prone to errors, representing a significant negative impact onto the company’s value-added stream. We provide one possible solution to these issues by presenting a PSS architecture modularization approach based upon the modularization methods of the Integrated PKT-Approach. Using concepts of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) for modelling these architectures, automated and dynamic analyses of the architecture for the iteration and harmonization of the PSS architecture under development are enabled. The at first generically described approach is further detailed in the second part of this contribution by applying it to an industry case study for mobile laser welding systems. As a result, a clear support for the visualization of architecture iteration aspects as well as for the enhancement of data consistency and continuity is given.Publicationtype: Journal ArticleScopus© Citations 8 190 274 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Simulation-based performance analysis for future robust modular product architecturesThe increased demand for customer-adapted product solutions shows an increasing trend of product variety, leading to an increased internal variety and therefore -costs. The concept of modularization provides apossible solution to this challenge by developing modular kits. Nevertheless, modularization methods to not lead to one individual modular kit, but to several alternatives. The decision of which alternative to implement can be crucial to the applying companys succes. During this decision-making both customer- and company perspectives need to be taken into account. This contribution is to present a simulation-based approach to support the decision making by using a model-based configuration system. Furthermore, as classical decision-making processes are based upon historical data, future aspects are usually not taken into account. In order to counteract this situation, this contribution intends to simulate as well future aspects impacting the modular product architecture. In this case, the simulation is used in order to evaluate the individual performances of a Design-for-Variety product architecture as opposed to a Design-for-Future-Robustness by applying this method to the example of customer-individual laser machines.Publicationtype: Conference PaperScopus© Citations 4 77 100 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Challenges in early phase of product family development processes(Elsevier, 2021-06-02); ; ; ; The early phase of product development is often described as particularly challenging. Especially in the case of innovations, various challenges that can be attributed to volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA) are said to come into play. Far more often than breakthrough innovation projects, however, product development projects found in industrial practice incorporate incremental innovations on component or module level. This is especially the case for product developments within product families, where often a large part of modules and technical solutions are used in several products simultaneously and over several development cycles. The aim of this paper is to identify specific challenges especially in the context of the early phase of product families, to assign them to the four dimensions of VUCA and to put them in the context of different boundary conditions, such as novelty degree. For this purpose, a two-part approach was chosen: first, empirical studies concerning the early phase of the product (family) development are summarized, second, three explorative and semi-structured interviews were conducted. As a result, it can be concluded that challenges related to complexity, such as difficult decision-making in balancing internal and external goals or due to interdisciplinary cooperation and coordination between the partners involved, ambiguity, such as due to different interpretations of the same information, as well as uncertainty, such as not knowing about future customer requests, are of particular importance. Challenges related to volatility, on the other hand, were mentioned only sporadically. Furthermore, closeness to the customer, for example, seems to be a boundary condition that favours or prevents the occurrence of certain challenges in the early phase of product family development.Publicationtype: Conference PaperScopus© Citations 7 115 195 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Influence analysis of the layer orientation on mechanical and metallurgic characteristics of DED manufactured parts(Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft Lasertechnik e.V., 2021-06); ; ; ; With an increasing trend in product individualization, manufacturing custom-designed solutions and focusing on the explicit industry’s needs are crucial to the manufacturer’s success. Especially within high-tech industries such as aerospace industry, high-strength, large-sized but still lightweight metal parts are required. Although the Direct-Energy-Deposition (DED)-technology offers a proven outset point for targeting this issue, there are few material-, metallurgic-, process-, and geometry specific data available to support the initial design process of such parts. This contribution presents a profound study of different steel- and aluminium materials with respect to their metallurgic and mechanical characteristics. Using a state-of-the art DED-Laser system, tensile test specimens have been manufactured with alternative layer orientations. These specimens are analyzed with regard to the required milling oversize, heat-induced stress deformation, metallurgic characteristics and their tensile characteristics. As a result of this investigation, a suitable baseline for the future generation of a DED design-by-feature catalogue is given.Publicationtype: Conference Paper92 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
