    Engineering better decisions: exploring influencing factors - an empirical study
    (Elsevier, 2025) ; ;
    Good decision-making is crucial in product development, particularly during early phases where decisions significantly impact subsequent processes. Previously, the authors identified influencing factors for decisions in the context of product development, including nudges through an extensive literature review. This study focuses on analyzing the improvement in decision quality. Two empirical studies were conducted to investigate the targeted influence of decision-making behavior in product development using influencing factors from behavioral economics. 10 out of 12 identified influencing factors demonstrated potential positive effects in influencing decision-making behavior and fulfilling identified framework conditions, such as unconstrained, transparent, and ethically justifiable use.

    Sustainable sheet-metal design: employing the Product Carbon Footprint as support for engineers in developing new roduct generations
    This study investigates a data-driven approach for integrating sustainability criteria into the design process to reduce the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of sheet-metal parts. In a Live-Lab research environment, the design solutions of four engineering teams were analyzed at each iteration to assess how immediate PCF feedback and detailed sustainability information impacted both the design process and the final Product Carbon Footprint of the sheet-metal parts. The findings show that understanding the influencing factors of sustainable sheet-metal design and receiving PCF feedback led to PCF reductions of over 30 %, highlighting the importance of quantifiable sustainability metrics in industrial design practices.

    Appropriate consideration of interfaces in product development
    The development of modular product families depends on correctly implementing appropriate interfaces. They exert a significant impact on the configurability of products, the interchangeability of modules, and the production processes and respective equipment. This paper analyses interfaces of modular product architectures from a strategic perspective and discusses the impact of these interfaces on sustainability and module-wise product modification of modular product families. In this context, it presents an enhancement of the module interface graph (MIG) for more effective treatment of interfaces in product development, based on two case studies in different fields of application.

    Determination of the right level of detail: A methodical approach for life cycle costing integration in product development
    (Elsevier, 2025) ; ;
    Wurst, Johanna
    ;
    ;
    In Life cycle costing the processing of the high amount of cost data is challenging for industrial companies. Depending on the existing product and business model the cost structure and the relevance of different cost types differs. To minimize the effort for data processing in product development, this paper presents a methodical approach to determine the needed level of detail concerning the consideration of life cycle cost. The necessary level of detail for business models can be defined by converting the existing cost data into a holistic cost model. The methodical approach presented is applied to an exemplary business model.

    Procedure for the multi-objective design and sustainability optimization of composite sandwich structures in aircraft cabin applications
    In engineering, optimizing products across multiple performance metrics - such as cost, weight, and environmental sustainability - presents a significant challenge. Composite sandwich structures, in particular, offer a vast design space with diverse materials and geometric parameters, leading to conflicting design objectives. This study presents a procedure integrating Genetic Algorithms (GA), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and rule-based performance metric calculations to address these challenges. GA facilitate efficient exploration of the design space, while via FEA mechanical performance is evaluated, and via rule-based calculations economic and ecological metrics are assessed. The procedure is applied to an aircraft partition-like sandwich structure, demonstrating its effectiveness in balancing trade-offs and achieving holistic design optimization. This approach provides valuable tools and insights for engineers and designers working with advanced composite materials, highlighting its potential to support sustainable development and informed decision-making in product design.

    Effective nudging in product design - a case study in the window construction industry
    The growing complexity of product design poses a challenge for team management. Nudging, a targeted behavioral influence method, offers a potential tool to address this matter. This study explores how nudges can aid product developers in decision-making. A field study in the innovation management department in the home appliances industry identified effective nudges and their degree of contribution. A workshop format introduced managers to nudge design and use. Findings showed positive impacts of nudges, notably improving transparency, collaboration, and team awareness, proving to be a promising tool for managing complex innovation processes in practical application.

    The influence of AI support on product development results: a live-lab case study of a top-heat grill
    This study examines the influence of AI tools on development speed, functionality, costs and team satisfaction in a university design project. Two engineering teams developed solutions for a top-heat grill within three development sprints. The test group used AI tools from the start, the control group from the third sprint onwards. The comparison, based on interviews and the evaluation from the software tools used, shows that the use of AI tools has a positive impact on development speed, functionality and costs. These findings support the understanding of the potential of AI tools in development projects.

    MBfX: proposing semantics for systematically applying system modelling techniques across different applications and domains
    System modelling techniques have become increasingly popular in recent years. While many of the approaches to using system models originated in systems engineering, hence Model-Based Systems Engineering, they are now being applied to various applications and domains, even outside the field of systems engineering. However, the term MBSE is still widely used; thus, a diverse understanding has evolved. This work proposes semantics to clearly describe research and approaches when systematically applying these system modelling techniques across different applications and domains of product or service design, to support transparency and comprehensibility.
