SilentHammer - Investigation of primary measures for the reduction of underwater noise emission during offshore pile driving - Sub-Project: Acoustic optimization of the components of impact hammers by numerical computation models
In most cases, offshore wind energy plants are fastened to the sea bed by pile driving. Due to the impulsive excitation of the pile, a considerable amount of underwater noise is generated, which may possibly harm aquatic life. To protect especially marine mammals, certain limit values on underwater noise have been introduced. To reduce underwater noise, different approaches are used. Primary measures reduce the noise emission directly at the source, e.g. by lowering the applied hammer energy. Secondary measures aiming at reducing the noise in the water column, e.g. bubble curtains or cofferdam systems. Due to the huge dimensions of the monopiles, both noise emission and thus also the requirements on the noise mitigation are increasing. Secondary mitigation measures have already reached a certain level of matureness. Therefore, the research project forcusses on primary measures to reduce the noise emission already at the source. To decrease the noise emission, an optimal shape of the ram mass and further hammer components will be determined. Furthermore, the hammer operation itself will be investigated from an acoustical viewpoint. Further important questions, like wear and durability of the optimized components as well as driveability, will also be addressed to ensure the a practical realisation later on. To avoid the high costs of real offshore tests, a validation of the numerical results is on the one hand made by scaled laboratory experiments. On the other hand, the attainable noise reduction under offshore conditions is verified by applying the numerical pile driving noise model, which has been successfully developed and applied within the BORA project.

SPP 1886 - Polymorphic uncertainty modelling for the numerical design of structures: "Modelling of vibro-acoustic systems with polymorphic uncertainties and its application to tyre road noise"
The acoustic quality of products gains an increasing importance in everyday life. Unfortunately, rather similar looking products of the same manufacturing process tend to show a high variation of their acoustic properties, which is based on geometry deviations or varying material parameters. Therefore, a confidence interval instead of one deterministic solution needs to be determined in order to allow for an early optimisation in the development of new vibro-acoustic systems. Doing so, it should be noticed that different characteristics of uncertainty may occur, namely variability, imprecision, and incompleteness. Consequently, an incorporation of just one characteristic is unrewarding. Instead, the polymorphic uncertainties of the quantities need to be handled, which is the general objective of this proposal. A representative technical example, strongly depending on the behaviour mentioned before, is tyre road noise. Therefore, this problem has been chosen to demonstrate the design process taking into account polymorphic uncertainties. Up to now, only deterministic numerical computations have been developed to predict tyre road noise, by other researchers as well as by the applicant. In a close collaboration between the latter one and the Chalmers University, Gothenburg, particularly in the project Leiser Straßenverkehr 3 (supported by BMWi), a very efficient and precise model for analysing the structural behaviour of tyres and their related sound emission could be developed. Within the current proposal this combined - but so far deterministic - numerical model shall be extended in order to introduce the polymorphic uncertainties to tyre road noise simulations. The treatment of multiphysical results, which rely on polymorphic uncertainties, has to be incorporated in the new model. The planned optimisation with respect to significant output parameters, such as the radiated noise and the rolling resistance, requires highly efficient numerical methods as well as a reduction of the problem dimension. Hence, the Fast Multipole Boundary Element Method is used for the sound radiation, while a Waveguide Finite Element Method is employed to represent the structural model. Although these two methods are very efficient already, a further reduction of the computational effort shall be established by a new metamodel, which promises an efficient way to handle the rather complex multi-objective optimisation also planned in the current proposal.

Turbulent flow field and resulting noise induced by hub-less propellers
The underwater noise which is generated by ship propulsion systems becomes a more and more growing environmental problem nowadays. A new promising design concept for the reduction of emitted underwater noise is the usage of hub-less propellers in conjunction with an electrical ring drive. Detailed research with respect to this new propulsion system, especially in terms of the turbulent flow field in and behind a hub-less propeller and the resulting sound field, has not been carried out so far. Main focus of the proposed project will be the investigation of the overall topology of the wake flow, the transition and collapse of the tip vortices, the topology of the horseshoe vortices at the blade hub and the radiated hydro acoustic sound field. Time resolved stereo PIV experiments in the wake flow of a hub-less propellers and time synchronous measurements of the fluctuating surface pressure in combination with fully transient DES computations of the turbulent flow field will be core elements of the planned research work. For the numerical prediction of the hydro-acoustic pressure field a fourth order Expansion over Incompressible Flow (EIF) approach will be developed based on a finite volume formulation. The approach for the analysis of the experimental data, numerical data and for the identification of coherent flow structures will be the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition procedure (POD). Moreover it will be complemented with vortex core extraction methods. Due to the usage of the POD method, conclusions to the acoustics of different coherent flow structures will be possible for the first time. In the outlook of this project, first design rules for the reduction of hydro-acoustic sound emissions might be reasoned.
