    An Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Study of Mesoporous Silicon in Aqueous Electrolyte Solution
    (2024-03-04) ;
    The dataset presented here belong to an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) study of mesoporous silicon in aqueous electrolyte solution (perchloric acid). The dataset contains EIS measurements performed at various static applied potentials so that a Mott-Schottky analysis of the electrode can be performed. Moreover, the dataset has an EIS study on a bulk silicon electrode, synthesized under equal conditions as the porous silicon electrode, so that a direect comparison between the two electrode types is possible.

    Wafer-scale fabrication of mesoporous silicon functionalized with electrically conductive polymers
    Dataset that contains different data on electrochemical and x-ray diffraction experiments of the synthesis and structure investigations of hybrid materials made out of conductive polymers and porous silicon. The mesoporous silicon epilayers are filled electrochemically with the polymers polypyrrole and poly-3,4-ethylendioxythiophen. Polyaniline could only be deposited on top of the porous silicon and not inside the mesopores. If applicable, the galvanostatic raw datasets have to normalized by the epilayer surface area of 7.89cm². The x-ray diffraction data contains both powder diffraction data sets (counts vs. 2-theta) and 2D detector images (P08 DESY synchrotron, 25 keV) of the monomer 2,5-Dibromo-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene and the polymer poly-3,4-ethylendioxythiophen after solid state polymerization at 60°C. The samples investigated at the synchrotron (2D datasets) are hybrid materials in which the mesoporous pore space of the silicon is filled via spontaneous imbibition of the DBEDOT and subsequently polymerized to PEDOT. Each 2D image is taken at a different z position in order to mitigate beam damage.

    How Nanoporous Silicon-Polypyrrole Hybrids Flex Their Muscles in Aqueous Electrolytes: In Operando High-Resolution X-Ray Diffraction and Electron Tomography-Based Micromechanical Computer Simulations
    Dataset that contains different data on an in situ, combined electrochemical and x-ray diffraction investigation of the electrochemical actuation of a polypyrrole-filled porous silicon hybrid material. The pores of nanoporous silicon are filled by the electroactive polymer polypyrrole. An applied potential to the hybrid material immersed in an electrolyte solution leads to an incorporation of ions into the polymer and an expansion of the whole hybrid material. This electrochemical actuation is investigated by x-ray diffraction experiments, in which the lattice constant of the highly mono-crystalline porous silicon host material is studied with respect to the actuation. The dataset contains the electrochemical and the x-ray datasets. Moreover, a transmission electron microscopy tomography is performed on the polypyrrole-porous silicon hybrid material to obtain a three-dimensional model. This tomography reconstruction is included in the dataset. It can be transformed into an FEM model so that the actuation-induced strains and stresses in the complex porous silicon host structure can be studied and compared to the experimentally gained insights.

    Wafer-Scale Fabrication of Hierarchically Porous Silicon and Silica by Active Nanoparticle-Assisted Chemical Etching and Pseudomorphic Thermal Oxidation
    Dataset containing analysis on a hierarchical porous silicon structure. The structure consists of 1µm macropores hexagonally arranged and interconnected by mesopores in the range of 60nm. Included are a scanning electron micrograph of an overview of the macroporous structure which can be analysed to obtain structural properties such as the pore diameter, surface roughness, surface area and pore volume. Also included are reconstructed transmission electron microscopy and transmission x-ray microscopy tomography data to analyse the same structural parameters on smaller and larger length scale, respectively.

    Multiple glassy dynamics of a homologous series of triphenylene-based columnar liquid crystals – A study by broadband dielectric spectroscopy and advanced calorimetry
    Hexakis(n-alkyloxy)triphenylene) (HATn) consisting of an aromatic triphenylene core and alkyl side chains are model discotic liquid crystal (DLC) systems forming a columnar mesophase where the molecules of HATn self-assemble and stack up in columns exhibiting one-dimensional high charge carrier mobility along the column axes. Here, a homologous series of HATn with different length of the alkyl chain (n=5,6,8,10,12) is investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) and advanced calorimetric techniques including fast scanning calorimetry (FSC) and specific heat spectroscopy (SHS). The phase behavior was studied by DSC and the influence of the alkyl chain length on the phase behavior was revealed. By the dielectric investigations probing the molecular mobility, a γ-relaxation due to localized fluctuations as well as two glassy dynamics the αcore and αalkyl relaxation were observed in the temperature range of the plastic crystalline phase. Moreover, the observed glassy dynamics were further studied employing advanced calorimetry. Possible molecular assignments for all observed relaxation processes are proposed and discussed in detail. From the results a transition at around n=8 from a rigid constrained (n=5,6) to a softer system (n=10,12) was revealed with increasing alkyl chain length. A counterbalance of two competing effects of a polyethylene like behavior of the alkyl chains in the intercolumnar domains and self-organized confinement is discussed in the context of a hindered glass transition.

    Laser-Excited Elastic Guided Waves Reveal the Complex Mechanics of Nanoporous Silicon
    Nanoporosity in silicon leads to completely new functionalities of this mainstream semiconductor. A difficult to assess mechanics has however significantly limited its application in fields ranging from nanofluidics and biosensorics to drug delivery and energy storage. Here, we present a study on laser-excited elastic guided waves detected contactless and non-destructively in dry and liquid-infused single-crystalline porous silicon.These experiments reveal that the selforganised formation of 100 billions of parallel nanopores per squarecentimetre crosssection results in a nearly isotropic elasticity perpendicular to the pore axes and an 80% stiffnessreduction in the material, despite a bulk-like and anisotropic porewall elasticity. Our thorough assessment of the wafer-scale mechanics of nanoporous silicon provides the base for predictive applications in robust on-chip devices and evidences that recent breakthroughs in laser ultrasonics open up entirely new frontiers for in-situ, non-destructive mechanical characterisation of dry and liquid-functionalised porous materials. Here saved are raw and processed data of laser ultrasonics measurements of porous and bulk silicon.
