    Scalable gradient-based approaches for topology and shape optimization under uncertainty
    This dissertation addresses the challenge of finding scalable frameworks for structural optimization under uncertainty. Therefore, efficient and non-intrusive formulations for the gradient computation of different Taylor series-based probabilistic methods are developed and a new probabilistic approach is presented. Additionally, challenges encountered by the multigrid finite element solver when dealing with (uncertain) anisotropic materials are discussed and a solution is presented.

    Hotspot cooling using phase change materials
    (Dr. Hut, 2021) ;
    Miniaturization of electronic components has dramatically increased the heat flux densities during the last decades with two main challenges: removing very high heat fluxes of up to 100 W/cm^2 and finding a cooling-solution for highly non-uniform power dissipation. While the former has gained much attention in latest research activities, the latter has not gained as much. Phase change material(PCM) based cooling systems show promising cooling performances in setups with periodical or finite operational time. Within commercially available PCM's, paraffins have high melting enthalpies and minor or no disadvantages like subcooling, phase separation, high costs or corrosion. Unfortunately, paraffins have a very low heat conductivity, which makes these impractical to be used without any thermal conductivity enhancer. One can choose to use a frame fin structure made of aluminum or copper. The resulting thermal energy storage is called composite latent heat storage(CLHS). A naturally emerging question is, weather these fin structures should depend on the heat load. A fin positioning optimization using a genetic algorithm suggests an even distribution of fins at the mid height of the CLHS. CLHS with internal fins based on a reference temperature are optimized using three different objectives with an optimization potential of up to 5.4%. An optimal control based approach on the assessment of a CLHS is also carried out. A total of nine CLHS are tested on a test rig for two heat load examples. Optimized CLHS have an up to 7.7K lower temperature of the electronic than a straight fin CLHS, leading to a reduced failure rate of up to 38%. These optimized fin structures perform well on the heat load, for which they were designed for, but poorly for the other heat load. Simulations and experiments show in both heat load cases good agreement in the relative prediction of the performances.

    Modellierung des dynamischen Verhaltens der zonalen Kabinentemperatur und anderer Komfortparameter in Flugzeugkabinen
    Der Flugzeugkabinenkomfort spielt für den Passagier eine große Rolle, da er sich während seiner Reise – anders als in anderen Massentransportmitteln wie Schiff oder Bahn – nicht frei bewegen kann und aufgrund der extremen Außenbedingungen während des Fluges einem vollständig künstlichen Umgebungsklima ausgeliefert ist. Insbesondere die thermische Behaglichkeit, welche einen entscheidenden Einfluss auf die menschliche Empfindung und damit auf den Kabinenkomfort hat, zeigt Optimierungsbedarf. Des Weiteren bemängeln viele Passagiere an der Flugzeugkabinenklimatisierung die Ausbildung eines unangenehmen Temperaturgefälles in Richtung des Kabinenbodens, worauf der Mensch aufgrund der am Fuß vermehrt angeordneten Thermorezeptoren sehr empfindlich reagiert. Zwei wesentliche Faktoren der Flugzeugklimatisierung stellen die Lufttemperatur und die Luftgeschwindigkeit dar, da sie das Temperaturverhalten in der Kabine und das Behaglichkeitsempfinden entscheidend beeinflussen. Aber auch die Wärmestrahlung hat einen großen Einfluss. Aus diesem Grund wird neben der konventionellen Klimatisierungsform in der vorliegenden Forschungsarbeit auch eine alternative Form der Klimatisierung mittels Kühldecken untersucht, da sich hier, insbesondere in Kombination mit einer Quelllüftung, ein großes Potential zeigt, die thermische Behaglichkeit in der Kabine für die Passagiere zu erhöhen. Die Untersuchung sowohl der sich bei der konventionellen Klimatisierung ausbildenden Kabinentemperaturdynamik als auch die Bewertung des Einsatzes von Kühldecken mit dem Ziel der Komfortoptimierung war Hauptaufgabe der vorliegenden Arbeit. Hierfür wurden Flugtestdaten analysiert sowie ein Modellteststand und verschiedene Simulationsmodelle zur Strömungs- bzw. Strahlungssimulation in der Modellierungssprache Modelica erstellt und die Ergebnisse ausgewertet.

    Numerische Analyse des Nachstroms und Propellereffektivität am manövrierenden Schiff
    The topic of this Ph.D. thesis is the analysis of the wake and the effectiveness of the propeller of manoeuvring ships. The wake of drifting and yawing ships was determined with the help of RANS-CFD-methods. By analysing the propeller in the effective wake the dependency of the effectiveness from manoeuvring states was identified. With this dependency a manoeuvring simulation was enhanced. Results were validated with model and full scale measurements.
