A compact adjustable hydraulic damper with symmetric high load behavior enabled by selective laser melting
This publication addresses the development of a compact, adjustable hydraulic damper that meets the requirements for vibration testing. Dampers from the literature do not meet all the requirements, such as compact design, vibration resistance, high strength, broadly adjustable and dominantly symmetrical damping, and modularity. Additive manufacturing (AM) enables the design of integral and compact systems that can compensate for several disadvantages of known damping systems. Three stages of development are presented, from a proof of concept to a prototype manufactured by Stereolithography (SLA) as Vat Photopolymerization (VPP-UVL/P) to a ready-to-use hydraulic damper manufactured by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) as Laser Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB/M). The final additively manufactured damper is much more compact due to its geometric freedom in the design phase and requires a much smaller number of components. The damper has been tested over a wide range of operating conditions and has proven its reliable damping performance even under high loads. This performance makes it suitable for many other systems subject to vibration.

Attributes of research environments for modelling engineering simulators for design support validation
With the aid of Engineering Simulators, laboratory environments are to be created which model engineering practice, enabling product developers to behave realistically. To be able to use Engineering Simulators for design support validation as a first step suitable attributes must be identified for modelling depending on the original and the purpose. The following different attributes are identified in a literature review: task, attendees, atmosphere, procedure, information provision, research leader, equipment, and data. Based on these attributes, the engineering practice of a mechatronic machine tool manufacturer is modelled. In an exploratory study, four tests are performed with the modeled Engineering Simulator. Hereby, possibilities for further design support validation due to realistic challenges that are triggered by specified attributes can be identified.

An adjustable impedance element - System requirements and design approach
Dynamic test are mostly performed in specific test setups with adjustable boundary conditions and relevant aspects of the product environment. The dynamic characteristics of the environment and boundary condition are represented by dynamic connection elements. The Impedance, frequency depending ratio of reaction force and deflection speed, can be used to describe the dynamic properties of dynamic connection elements. In the first part of this article two demonstrator systems are introduced to explain the current challenges in dynamic testing and specify the need for a machine element with adjustable impedance. In the second part of this article the design approach and performance of the current adjustable impedance element is introduced. In the last part the planned collaboration between three research facilities is introduced to tackle the current challenges in dynamic testing by applying the adjustable impedance element to existing test setups.
