Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Self-organizing systems in the construction industrySelf-organization is found in numerous natural and artificial systems. For the construction industry, self-organizing processes are not only applicable in managing or organizing tasks, they also provide insight into materials or can be implemented into operations on building sites. In this paper, the terms feedback, agents, emergence and self-organization are described to provide an insight into the complex processes relevant to a lot of fields in the construction industry. For this, the principles of adaptive processes are transferred to artificial systems. Besides self-organization in building materials, an outlook is given to describe construction sites as cyber-physical systems. Inside such systems, agents learn to organize work tasks more efficiently, particularly with the help of reinforcement learning. In this regard, a transfer of natural self-organization—which also exist in materials—to building processes is made. A combination of natural and artificial systems is presented to promote self-organization for various fields of application in the construction industry, especially for building sites.Publicationtype: Review Article18 92 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publicationtype: Book part14 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Access status: without files , Sensorintegrierte Digitale Zwillinge für das automatisierte Monitoring von Infrastrukturbauwerken(2022); ; Sensor-integrated digital twins for wireless structural health monitoring of civil infrastructure. Digital twins constitute a promising technology that lies at the core of emerging trends within Industry 4.0, such as cyber-physical systems and the Internet-of-Everything. The civil engineering community has been showing increasing interest in adopting digital twins for operation and management purposes, e. g. within the framework of structural health monitoring (SHM). In particular, SHM stands to benefit from the enhanced predictive capabilities of digital twins, which yield richer information on structural conditions than conventional models. However, adapting state-of-the-art digital twins to modern SHM strategies, which rely on wireless technologies, is hardly straightforward. Specifically, digital twins that model a physical process are usually centralized and updated using large amounts of data collected from the physical process. By contrast, wireless SHM systems are distributed, and wireless SHM strategies typically focus on minimizing wireless communication, which is unreliable and power-consuming. In this context, this paper presents the results of a feasibility study that discusses the practical considerations of embedding digital twins in wireless SHM systems. Through field tests on a pedestrian bridge, instrumented with a wireless SHM system, the decentralized embedment of a digital twin – in the form of partial digital twins – into the wireless sensor nodes is reported. The field test results indicate that decentralized digital twins can advantageously be used for advancing wireless SHM.Publicationtype: Journal Article32 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Einflüsse der Digitalisierung auf Baustellenarbeitsprozesse(2021); The various changes in the construction industry caused by the effects of digitalization are increasingly influencing work processes on construction sites. In order to be able to respond to the modifications that are already taking place and, in particular, to those that will be increasingly necessary in the future, this study has recorded and analyzed the often interdependent and usual very complex relationships that intertwine during the construction of buildings. At the beginning the current status of potential digital tools and instruments is listed. Based on a categorization of innovative technologies for construction site activities, it is discussed how new and future-oriented technologies affect the often purely manual processes. Thus, due to manifold implementations, not only changes occur in the context of detached work activities. Traditional processes are redesigned, conventional role models are changed or existing forms of communication are reorientated. In the course of the analysis, it has been identified that the BIM method in particular exerts a major influence on the existing, mostly analogous informatization processes on construction sites. In the course of digitalization, the integration of innovative technologies also leads to an increasing number of human-machine interactions, which must always be taken into account in analyses of new types of tools and instruments, e.g. in the form of augmented reality applications or due to growing robot integrations. Especially in the construction industry, in addition to various site-specific factors, such as weather or dirt, non repetitive work activities on site must also be brought into focus. Taking into account a variety of aspects inherent to the industry, it has been shown that many processes on construction sites can not be substituted or automated. As there are many small and medium-sized companies in the building industry, the question arises which digital tools and instruments are currently used on construction sites and how intensively they are already being used. Based on the assumption that most construction companies are using digital tools very little, an online survey was created to determine the current status of the use of innovative technologies on construction sites. The survey has shown that only a few companies have so far used innovative technologies within construction projects. In addition to the presentation of tools and instruments that will be relevant in the future, this study provides insights about the possible use of digital technologies on construction sites, on the essential processes of informations due to BIM, and also explicit specifications for educational concepts.Publicationtype: Doctoral Thesis1404 7474 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publicationtype: Book Part217 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publicationtype: Conference Paper120 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publicationtype: Journal Article292 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publicationtype: Journal Article170
