    Teamflow und Entscheidungen: Empirische Analyse in kollaborativen Konstruktionsprozessen
    (The Design Society, 2026-10) ; ; ; ;
    Collaborative design teams in team flow exhibit high communicative coherence but may suppress critical reflection, yielding poor decision quality despite apparent effectiveness — a phenomenon the authors term "Deceptive Fluency." This exploratory study combines AI-based team flow analysis (Teamflow-Score 6.83/10) with expert-rated decision quality assessment (S1=2.48, S2=2.04, Fleiss' κ=0.57, nominal) in a real GSD live-lab session. Results from this single case study provide first exploratory indications of a co-occurrence of high team flow and low decision quality in 7 of 9 decisions. Ten requirements for a data-driven, flow-preserving assistance system are derived across three dimensions: recognition, intervention design, and technical integration

    A new design method to account for interlaminar stresses in laminated composites using machine learning
    (Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2025-08-27) ; ; ;
    Lightweight design is critical for improving the efficiency and sustainability of engineering applications. Laminated composites, with their high strength-to-weight ratio and tailored material properties, play a key role but introduce interlaminar stresses, particularly near free edges where delamination failures often occur. Addressing these stresses typically requires computationally expensive 3D finite element simulations, limiting their use in early design stages. This study presents a machine learning approach using Gaussian process regression and artificial neural networks to efficiently predict interlaminar stresses based on in-plane stress data from shell FE simulations. Achieving high predictive accuracy, this method enables cost-effective, early-stage composite design optimization under complex loading scenarios.

    Experimental study on the fatigue performance of CFRP beams with structured surface load introduction under cyclic loading
    CFRP is widely used in lightweight structures subjected to cyclic loading. However, the fatigue performance at the structural level, particularly with mechanical joints, remains insufficiently understood. This study investigates the fatigue behavior of quasi-isotropic CFRP square tubes under cyclic 3-point bending, with a focus on a load introduction concept using bolted connections with structured surface plates. The specimens are tested under fully reversed loading at 1 Hz. Quasi-static baseline tests reveale linear behavior up to failure and high reproducibility between specimens. Cyclic tests show a clear increase in fatigue life with decreasing load amplitude. Hysteresis analysis reveals asymmetric behavior and narrowing around the zero-crossing prior to failure, especially in high-cycle specimens. The specimen with the highest cycle count exhibited a distinct fiber fracture on the tensile side, suggesting a change in failure mode compared to quasi-static loading. The results highlight the relevance of the hysteresis loop shape as a potential indicator for fatigue damage and structural monitoring. The findings underscore that fatigue failure may occur in locations different from those under static loading, suggesting that conventional design approaches based on static safety factors may be insufficient for the design of CFRP structures.

    A simulation-based approach for the automated design of fatigue resistant continuous fibre-reinforced components
    Fibre-reinforced plastics are increasingly being used in important structural components. Here they are often subjected to cyclic loading, which leads to a deterioration in material properties. However current design methods hardly take this fatigue behavior into account. Instead, they rely on conservative safety factors, resulting in over-dimensioned components. In order to realise the full lightweight potential, we propose an innovative method that enables a targeted design for a defined service life. It integrates knowledge from experimental fatigue testing and uses modified mathematical failure criteria to predict the degree of fatigue throughout the part. This allows us to adaptively reinforce fatigue critical areas, resulting in lightweight and fatigue resistant structures.

    Designing lightweight structures under consideration of material and structure uncertainties on different levels of the building block approach
    Lightweight design is an important aspect in the development of components to reduce material use and obtain energy-efficient structures. Frequently, lightweight structures are designed for one or a few load cases. Therefore, optimized designs can be less robust against changes in boundary conditions, scattering material parameters or deviating tolerances. Thus, these structures must be designed with safety factors that counteract the targeted lightweight design goal. In this article, an approach for the consideration of uncertainties is presented. The approach allows evaluating potentials of the accurate consideration of uncertainties. Finally, the developed approach is implemented for the calculation of the buckling load and torsional strength of thin-walled CFRP cylinderical shells.

    Zur Notwendigkeit eines konstruktionsmethodischen Ansatzes für die zeitfeste Auslegung endlosfaserverstärkter Kunststoffbauteile
    Efficient and systematic design methods are indispensable aids on the way to effective lightweight solutions. In this article, the necessity of providing the product developer with a design method for the design of endless fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) components to fulfil fatigue requirements is highlighted. Existing damage models and test methods could be used and extended within such approaches. A suitable method should take into account particularly the variety of requirements for FRP components and consider other influences, e.g. from multi-layer composite design or load introduction, preferably supported by CAE tools. The simple applicability of an effective approach should be demonstrated both on test specimens and on demonstrator components.
