    Digital assistance systems for just-in-sequence packing: key enablers for productive shipyard assembly
    Assembly personnel in one-of-a-kind shipbuilding dedicate only a small proportion of their on-site time to value-adding activities, with non-productive tasks consuming up to 78% of their working hours. Considerable effort is expended on material procurement, information retrieval, and preparation of work sites. In addition, evolving customer requirements and internal planning deviations lead to frequent design changes in the production phase, resulting in substantial rework and elevated scrap rates. This is particularly evident for pipes, fittings, and related accessories, which are integral to numerous onboard systems throughout the vessel. Coordinating their delivery through traditional sequential scheduling results in redundant handling due to time-consuming retrieval processes for pre-manufactured parts by suppliers, and complex on-site material provision by shipyard logistics. A promising approach to overcome these challenges is to schedule frequent, small-batch deliveries in line with construction progress. While synchronizing supplier production and delivery with the assembly progress has proven to be an effective solution in automotive serial production, its application in one-of-a-kind shipbuilding is severely limited by the poor availability and accessibility of up-to-date information. To bridge this gap, this paper examines the picking and packing of installation-ready units by suppliers through the systematic use of prototype digital assistance systems integrated with a consistent database. Ultimately, this approach aims to significantly enhance the productivity of shipyard assembly workers and accelerate overall ship delivery schedules.

    How digital assistance systems improve the analysis of industrial assembly processes
    (De Gruyter, 2026-06-20) ;
    The analysis of work processes in industrial assembly is essential for improving ergonomics and productivity. Digital assistance systems that automatically capture and analyse data from work processes using motion capture systems are showing great potential. This reduces the effort involved and makes it possible to perform different analyses simultaneously. We have developed such an assistance system and applied it both in a laboratory environment and in industry to assess its potential benefits. The results show that the digital assistance system can be used to quickly and effectively improve the ergonomics and productivity of assembly processes, both in early planning phases and during ongoing production.

    A coordinated approach to apply value stream analysis to the one-of-a-kind shipbuilding supply chain
    In one-of-a-kind shipbuilding, shipyards rely on highly diversified supply chains involving multiple suppliers and subcontractors. The high complexity of the processes and the unique nature of the ships present challenges for the planning and coordination of the assembly at the shipyard and for production and logistics at the suppliers. The current organization leads to long delivery times, and high inventory costs. In addition, productivity losses occur due to extra work, e.g., searching for and modifying pre-manufactured components or delayed material supply at the assembly. Synchronizing the provision of materials from suppliers with the actual assembly offers promising potential for improvement. In one-of-a-kind production, Just-in-Sequence delivery is applicable only to a limited extent due to a lack of data and insufficient communication. The systematic use of digital assistance systems in the shipbuilding supply chain offers the potential to establish a consistent database and to provide user-oriented real-time information. As a first step, this paper performs an exhaustive analysis of the shipyard and supply chain processes regarding material and information flow, and the key figures from production planning and control. For this purpose, a value stream analysis adapted to the one-of-a-kind shipbuilding process was carried out at a shipyard and three of its suppliers.

    The Enabled Worker Combining Smart Hand Tools, Active Exoskeletons and Digital Assistance Systems in the Production of the Future
    Manual work processes require high quality, process reliability and ergonomics. The increasing individualization of products further increases these requirements. Smart hand tools, (active) exoskeletons and digital assistance systems can help here. Linking these technologies in terms of sensors, information technology and mechanics can enable a context detection and adaptive process support in order to improve quality, increase process reliability and reduce stress on workers.

    Disruption management in one-off production with collaborative digital assistance systems : benefits of an integrative approach with a generic data model
    (GITO mbH Verlag für Industrielle Informationstechnik und Organisation, 2022) ; ; ;
    Disruptions inevitably occur in the project execution of complex one-off projects (Fischäder 2007). They cause effort and costs and, in many cases, delay the progress of the project. Nevertheless, in practice, disruption management is often inadequate ...
