Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Bewertung von neuer Technik in der Mobilität am Beispiel autonomer Minibusse im ÖPNV ländlicher Räume(2026); There are many hopes associated with autonomous driving in road traffic. These include greater road safety, better participation of people without a driving licence, a different use of the time gained and a reduction in the costs of motorised transport. Flexible mobility for all is expected in rural areas. However, in many respects, there is currently insufficient information available on the specific consequences of autonomous driving. The aim of this paper is to counter this deficit by using a procedure that provides knowledge at an early stage in a holistic assessment of a new mobility technology. In addition to determining the current state of the technology and its potential, the risks and collateral effects of the socio-technical system are to be identified. In the specific application of the procedure, the focus is to be on driverless minibuses in local public transport in rural areas as a possible area of application for the technology. Although the research carried out on available solutions to the methodological challenge does not provide a directly applicable procedure from the fields of transport planning, technology assessment and technology evaluation, it does however provide helpful theoretical findings. These lead to a highly structured procedure that is suitable for the evaluation of a technology in mobility. The work phases are divided into a scoping process, a definition of the individual target system, a review of the application conditions, a synthesis of potential application scenarios and an analysis and comprehensive evaluation of the socio-technical system. The decisive valuation phase comprises the determination of individual target achievement, an understanding of the current impact structure and a multiperspective categorisation of the risks. When applying the previously developed procedure, various methods are used to access the “Test centre for automated buses in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg”, which enables the practical testing of automated test vehicles and the participation of stakeholders, users and the public. As a result, the evaluation shows that the use of driverless vehicles in public transport cannot fundamentally solve the challenges of mobility in diverse rural areas. The anticipated great potential of driverless minibuses in terms of increased safety, cost reduction with dispersed demand and unrestricted social participation currently appears to be overestimated for the application under consideration. The application of the risk analysis reveals negative consequences of driverless driving: potential dangers with a high level of damage include, in particular, misuse or manipulation of the technology, negative environmental and health effects, lack of participation and high complexity with susceptibility to faults and corresponding consequences in the event of high technical dependency. Further specific risks are identified that influence social acceptance and people's current perceptions. The newly developed injustice factor can be used to differentiate between objectively unjust risks and subjectively critically perceived risks. However, it also becomes clear that a sudden, major irreversible extent of damage caused by driverless driving in road traffic has not yet been recognised. The overall conclusion is that driverless driving is not fundamentally the solution in terms of the defined objectives. The mobility system's overarching capabilities with optimised integration and interconnectivity of different means of transport must be considered, taking into account the individual needs in the respective area. Reliability, spatial and temporal flexibility with short access routes as well as manageability and comprehensibility play an important role here. Driverless driving, as a possible component of the overall mobility to be designed, requires further critical consideration and control so that it can have a holistically positive impact. The added value of this process results from the resolution of the complexity of a technology in the management and control dilemma under the production of structured orientation knowledge. A comprehensive socio-technical understanding of the system under consideration is achieved, which enables a realistic and holistic view of the capabilities and risks of the technology in a situational analysis. The chosen approach motivates the linking of different methods that place people and their individual needs at the centre of the sustainable development of technology.Publicationtype: Doctoral Thesis232 143 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Tarif-Erreichbarkeit: ein Verfahren zur preisbasierten Messung der Erreichbarkeit im Öffentlichen Personennahverkehr unter besonderer Berücksichtigung einkommensarmer Fahrgäste(2026); Public transport fares are an important cost factor for low-income earners. Although people with low economic status have increased their travel more than other groups since the 2000s, they have had to spend proportionately more out of their household budgets as fares had risen well above inflation until the introduction of the 9 Euro Ticket and the Deutschlandticket. Everyday destinations became less and less accessible, which increased the vulnerability to transport poverty and indirectly threatened the inclusion of those affected. Many have coped with the financial hardship by not travelling at all or by carefully spreading their journeys between single and day tickets to reduce their mobility costs. This study addresses this practice by systematically measuring, for the first time, the accessibility that pay-as-you-go fares facilitate. The fare accessibility indicator was developed for this purpose. Using the Hamburg and Berlin-Brandenburg transport associations HVV and VBB as examples, the indicator quantifies how many destinations a passenger can reach for 2.30 EUR. The indicator is examined in relation to eight variables for urbanity and analysed separately for urban and rural areas using one linear and three spatial multivariate regression models. The dissertation also examines whether the model sensitivity to transport equity increases with the spatial resolution. For this purpose, all statistical analyses are described at three spatial levels (municipality / stop / 500 m grid). Overall, the VBB offers greater fare accessibility. With a budget of 2.30 EUR, passengers in Berlin/Brandenburg can reach a median of 91 stops, compared to only 74 stops in the HVV. The distribution of fare accessibility is also different. In the HVV it clearly follows centrality, whereas in the VBB, with several district-wide social and special fares, financial accessibility extends far into the area. This is also reflected in the different regression parameters for two variables. In the HVV, high fare accessibility is associated with low purchasing power and low car availability, while in the VBB the opposite is true. The other estimators are largely similar, with positive correlations with rent and the public transport index, and negative correlations with travel time, dwelling area and distance to the city centre. Population density plays a smaller role in the multivariate model than expected. Overall, the models confirm that the level of spatial analysis has an influence on sensitivity. The stop level offers a compromise between the need for precision and the available computational capacity. With the newly developed fare accessibility, the study extends the established indicators by the aspect of financial costs. From a large-scale perspective, the indicator is quite similar to existing measures of urbanity. However, especially in the local transport and social planning, it can help to identify deficits in order to ameliorate transport poverty. Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Effekte etablierter Carsharing-Angebote auf die Carsharing-Akzeptanz, den Pkw-Besitz und das Mobilitätsverhalten in urbanen Wohnquartieren(2025); In recent years, business-to-consumer carsharing has evolved from a niche market to a relevant mobility option in the inner-city areas of major German cities. However, most previous research on the use and impact of carsharing has only addressed the initial stages of its diffusion, focusing mainly on early adopters of carsharing. It remains uncertain to what extent findings from these studies can be applied to more mature carsharing services and their users. This dissertation, therefore, examines the acceptance and effects of carsharing in the inner city of Hamburg—a study area with comparatively well-established carsharing services and advanced diffusion of carsharing memberships among the population. Acceptance is defined as the current use of carsharing or the willingness to use it in the future. Regarding the effects of carsharing, the dissertation focuses on its impact on car ownership and mobility behavior. A survey of carsharing users and non-users in 16 inner-city neighborhoods in Hamburg, conducted in November and December 2019, serves as the empirical basis. The results show that the attitudes and socio-demographic characteristics of current carsharing users in Hamburg remain different from those of non-users, despite the advanced diffusion of carsharing memberships. Carsharing users in Hamburg are significantly more likely to be young, male, highly educated, have a high income, and have a relatively positive attitude toward car use, although the differences between carsharing users and non-users are rather modest. However, non-users who are strongly interested in carsharing—and thus represent potential future carsharing users—differ from the typical profile of current users. Compared to existing users, these interested non-users are more heterogeneous in terms of socio-demographics and attach less importance to car use while valuing cycling and public transport more. This suggests that the further establishment of carsharing services is indeed leading to a diversification of the user base. Regarding the effects of carsharing in Hamburg, the results show that carsharing reduces car ownership and the general level of car use, benefiting not only the carsharing services themselves but also (other) environmentally friendly means of transport. However, these effects are relatively small, mainly due to the different use and impact of station-based versus free-floating carsharing. Unlike station-based carsharing, free-floating carsharing does not appear to significantly reduce car ownership, yet it has seen the strongest growth in membership in recent years and is preferred by the vast majority of carsharing members in Hamburg. The results of this dissertation suggest that (more comprehensive) transport planning and policy support for carsharing services is advisable. This includes measures to increase the adoption of carsharing among currently underrepresented demographic groups, as well as measures to amplify the effect of carsharing on car ownership of its users.Publicationtype: Doctoral Thesis169 199 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Mobilitätsbausteine für mehr Pkw-Freiheit – eine empirische Untersuchung zur Ableitung zielgruppenspezifischer Maßnahmen für autoarme Mobilität im städtischen RaumIn a first step, the psychological background of people’s mobility behavior was classified based on guided interviews with experts. According to this study the implementation of effective push and pull measures is considered to be more effective when adjusting them to target groups and combining both, restrictions and incentives. Additionally, a household survey was carried out in two districts in Hamburg. The survey data was analysed using descriptive and explanatory statistics to examine the future modal shift after implementing measures for more car-free living. With this aim in mind, scenarios for future mobility were formulated in the household survey, including the implementation of push and pull measures. Based on these scenarios, survey participants were asked to indicate which modes of transport they would choose in the future and whether they would consider not owning a car. The final part of the paper identifies groups of people based on their future mobility behavior.Publicationtype: Master Thesis454 544 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Szenarien zu energieautonomer Mobilität am Beispiel der Bodenseeregion(2021); Using the example of the Lake Constance region, the thesis discusses whether and under what conditions the transport energy demand of a region can be completely covered by domestic, renewable sources. Several scenarios are being developed for this. It can be shown that a complete decarbonization of the transport system is possible if the necessary framework conditions are created in the next 5 to 10 years at the latest. Covering the transport energy demand with renewable energy sources from the region also appears possible under very favorable framework conditions.Publicationtype: Doctoral Thesis618 1655 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Access status: with files , Reurbanisierung und VerkehrThis empirical work examines the spatial process of demographic change, that has been coined reurbanization, and its effects on transport. It aims to assess reurbanization from a transport-planning perspective and to draw conclusions on how these processes should be formed by urban planning. The empirical basis of the work comprises a quantitative analysis of official statistics from the german city-regions of Hamburg and Leipzig and a qualitative analysis regarding the transport behavior of people from Hamburg who drive the reurbanization prozesses.Publicationtype: Doctoral Thesis2269 3288 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publicationtype: Doctoral Thesis2932 7987 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
